TERRIBLE TERRIBLE MOVIE

How can anyone take this movie seriously? I suppose it started out OK, but c'mon. The acting was bad, the dialogue was embarassing, and the direction was as stupid. It was the typical "trying to be smart and cool" movie just wasn't smart nor cool. The angles and shots were simple and cliche, nothing new or artistic, and the big bad "cons" that are made throughout the movie are laughable and cheesy. The scene where he "totally outsmarts" the guy to get a job was awful. "WOW man!! YOU SURE GOT HIM!!!"(sarcasm). You just have to roll your eyes at this garbage. I love the looks on the people when they supposedly get conned, as if they would actually feel outsmarted. A reaction from any real person would just be, oh, about the complete opposite. How can you take this serious?
So much many of the scenes just made no sense. The whole thing with the friends doing god knows what, the guy who gets the girl that likes to be beaten up or choked, how did this have anything to do with the movie? I guess it was supposed to be comic relief, but it just didn't work.
Even though everyone I was watching this trash with wanted to turn it off halfway through, I still had some belief it would redeem itself somehow. I lost all hope when the movie cut to the kid brother trying to play music at the bar. Worthless scene that just made no sense at all. We proceeded to watch the rest of the movie amused at how bad it was, only because we had already wasted enough time watching it anyway.
Walken couldn't even save this movie. His acting was so over the top that it was obvious to me that he knew it was garbage, and just made a joke out of his own image. I was honestly embarassed for him.
The main guy, I dunno his name, "Walter" from "Kalifornia", was miserable. I wanna be Affleck that failed, which is pretty bad considering Affleck isnt even all that great. Its even worse he wrote and directed this.
A truely terrible movie and I'm baffled at the fact people actually ate this stuff up.

"The acting was bad" - Exactly what was so terrible about the acting?

"the dialogue was embarassing" - THe dialogue was very clever, especially when Walken and Callahan first meet each other and Walken makes a joke about Callahan's hair.

"The scene where he "totally outsmarts" the guy to get a job was awful" "How can you take this serious?" - It is not intended for you to take these scenes seriously. Do you honestly think Callahan made this movie with Oscar in his mind?

"Walken couldn't even save this movie. His acting was so over the top that it was obvious to me that he knew it was garbage, and just made a joke out of his own image. I was honestly embarassed for him" - Walken's acting was fine. He played his character with great enthusiasm and he has great chemistry with Callahan, especially when the scene when they shoot pool at the lawyer's party.

Pswilson, you are way too harsh on this movie, it was made to entertain-and by entertain I mean to not take seriously.

Personally I thought it was a good movie, not great, good. The dialogue was very clever and the pool shots were amazing.

i think the poor direction, writing and lead acting can all be attributed to the fact the same guy did all three.
add in the fact this movie wasnt made for a whole ton of cash, and i cant really blame them for re using shots, you do what you gotta do with what you have at your disposal.
i agree mars shouldnt have done all three, possibly just act the part, because sometimes he did show some good character and other times he just seemed awkward, but for the most part i think if he focussed on the role he could have done a much better job.
a different director could have completely redeemed this movie.
that said i still like it a lot.

responding to ghostmint on tue feb 22 2005 110042: it's curious how you mention sloppy pool playing sequences as if it's something new to pool films. both the hustler and, even more so, the color of money had plenty of sloppy sequences. nearly every pool playing sequence in the color of money that involved cuts had at least one flaw. by no means do i think this film is great, but sloppy pool sequences is a flaw that is very difficult to overcome in any pool film. speaking of "terrible terrible movies", anyone see 'stickmen'...?

reply

i thought the movie was great, i enjoyed it. to each it's own. but i just wanted to mention that when you see the same ball going in multiple times in one scene, it's because they are playing five games per bet, so obviously, the 9 ball has to go in more than once. but i'm glad you liked the movie and didn't rip it a new a-hole.

reply

I agree exactly with pswilson. Callahan was terrible at writing, directing, and acting. He was not believable at all as some tough guy, wise cracking character. I wanted to turn this movie off after the lead actor was introduced but sat through the whole movie and even got a few laughs out of how bad it was. The parts where he outsmarted people were not believable at all. In real life the person supposedly being outsmarted would have some type of response and not just stand there like an idiot. I know this from real life experience, something which Callahan needs more of. "You got your shoes on your feet", pissed me off the most. Walken was decent but completely unnecessary in the role. Everything about the most was completely trite. Everythingt that was supposed to be hip, smart, cool all failed. I know it sounds like i'm regurtating a lot of what the original poster said but I just feel the same way about it. Callahan is a pretentious dick for putting himself in the lead role. He's also a complete idiot for thinking up a movie about pool and actually making it himself.

THIS MOVIE WAS AWESOME. Dont listen to this guy/I got this on dvd & i have seen it about 15 times now. IT IS A GREAT MOVIE>A GREAT POOL MOVIE.

reply

I Must Agree, I Loved This Movie, Maybe Because I Am A Poolhall Junkie Myself!

reply

35% positive reviews nation wide= rotten on Rotten Tomatoes= garbage movie.

reply

Glad to see you can think for yourself.

I love this movie. I've seen it a dozen times, I have the poster in my pool room, and I quote it regularly when playing. Can't get enough of it.

reply

All I know is this: Mars had better be a hell of a lot better pool player now than he was when we used to take his money regularly, or whatever he made off this film is long gone....in the pockets of mediocre hustlers.

reply

why shouldn't i "listen to this guy"? Just because you have a pirated DVD that you watch a lot?!? Worst film i've seen in a long time. Callahan should be praised for getting the cr@pfest made in the first place, but all props end there.

What the *beep* is a Chinese Downhill?!?

reply

THANK YOU!!! I couldn't stand this movie, and eventually I had to turn it off. Maybe the people who liked it are just into the pool stuff, because they certainly can't be into things such as good acting, good dialogue, good directing, etc...

"Don't you snap at me unless you want an angry Solid Gold dancer on your hands."

I agree with PWilson. I am watching the movie right now and even within the first 20 mins I could tell this movie is garbage. It has Cliche written all over it. I am still wondering why I put this on my netflix...WTF?

I guess you have to really like pool to enjoy this movie, but the older I get the more I realize...pool kinda sucks...

I'm turning this movie off right now.
If you enjoy originality, good story, and good acting...don't watch this move!

reply

I think it was a great movie ... watched it with no expectations and I enjoyed it.
Sure the movie isnt perfect, but I will and already have watched it multiple times. Could it have used some improvement ? , sure.
Some of the flow was jerky and the small lines of the dialog could have been re written. Everyone who knows about budget and time constraints should understand.
Character chemistry was great and Mars and Christopher made the movie fun to watch. Anyone who cant understand should spend more time looking at themselves or elsewhere for their entertainment.
Bottom line I was pleased with the overall product and am looking forward to seeing more from Mars Callahan in the writing acting and directing aspects.

this movie sucked a$$! Probably Walken's worst movie -- including Balls of Fury.

I agree with you about Vincenzo's comments -- sounds like a "house plant". What a tool!

What the *beep* is a Chinese Downhill?!?

reply

you all need to get a life and stop criticizing this movie...like any of you could do any better

reply

Well darn, I happen to love this movie. I have been shooting pool all of my life since I can remember. Now does it mean its an Oscar worthy film? Hell no, but its not that bad.

reply

what a tool? are you joking? you do realize that when she referred to Vincezo as a plant she ment he was instructed by someone else, probably Big Sky, to make that positive post. You sir, are a tool a.k.a. douchebag (hope you know how to read that) a.k.a. go step in front of a cement mixer.

i for one thought it was an decently entertaining movie. by no means even close to oscar worthy, but id give it a 7/10

reply

I love how everyone always forgets this is a DTV cheapie.

Enjoy it for what it is. Or don't watch it. :)

reply

i guess the fact that people are still talking about it means it's good enough. did some people like it? yes. are the people involved with it still working? yes. did it turn a profit? yes. looks like mission accomplished to me

reply

yeah the whole "you got your shoes on your feet" line was really stupid. and i definately think that callahan was not right for the part, but how can you not say that walken wasnt magnificent in his role, the line "im a millionaire, thats the difference!" was AWESOME!!! and the whole speech in the bathroom about the lions would get anybody pumped up. and when danny sang "redneck gigilo" i mean come on that was a cool song, unless you listen to soulja boy i guess.

reply

Wow did this movie suck. The lead actor seemed like the poor man's Ryan Reynolds. The side kick "comedy" characters just didn't fit in. The dialogue tried to be funny and out there, but they tried too hard and it came off very forced. Same with the jokes. A kid in a hot tub about to drink Coke and pop rocks? Wow, never seen that before! Walken was his usual great self, but nearly everyone else was all sorts of bad. The lead female was horrendous, and I'm pretty sure I could put on a wig, shave my chest, and do a better job than her.

Anyone wonder why they put up $100,000 in the final pool match when they were just trying to get $25,000 to bail his brother?

I really like this movie alot...i've seen it over 10 times lol , I guess you gotta know how to play pool and stuff to understand this movie...i mean they don't do your typical pool shots ...sure they're pretty easy but they use masse , english , backspin , draw..and other techniques and any real pool player should know that...

and I like how some real professional players come out like 'mike massey' he's greatly known as a trick shot artist and very respected in the pool world ..., the part where he cons the guys boss to get the trailer job, isn't a "big con" but merely just a fill in ..They shook hands and he got hustled not a big hustle But he should've seen it coming and his reaction seems pretty normal to me He doesn't look like he's been outsmarted he's more like WTF?? then the camera cuts off..

and you probably weren't seeing the movie if you didn't understand the scene with the girl wanting 'Chris' to choke her , it was funny because they were making fun of him and calling him gay when they were in the restaurant and he said some girls creep him out..so when the girl asked him to choke her that creeped him out! As for his brother playing music that was made obvious when him and 'johnny' were at the pawn shop and he had his guitar he told him to go see him when he played ...as for walken it was a nice performance and he played his part well, I don't know how it could've been any better..and how is the main guy a wanna be affleck ? affleck doesn't play pool and isn't as tall as him and The lead guy is just down to earth you can see him playing in a pool hall with some guys and he loses on youtube, anyways ..thanks for seeing the movie or I should say Thanks for not seeing the movie.

I absolutely agree, this movie sucks. There's not a single believable situation, including Rick Schroeder, "the 13th ranked player in the world", using a $16 cue from WalMart, in a violin case. What idiot thought that one up? Obviously, no one who knows the game, and that's what this movie was about, the game. Notice how almost every shot was either slammed into the pocket, banked in, or both? You can watch a 9 ball game for 2 hours, and see maybe a half-dozen bank shots. At the level these people are supposed to be on, you may never see a bank shot. And you never, never, ever hit a shot harder than you need to. God I hated this flick.
If you read the book "Hollywood Interrupted", you find Mars Callahan is reduced to selling cheap pots and pans to bored housewives. What a scumbag. And wierd looking, too.

I COULDN'T AGREE MORE. HATED THE MAIN CHARACTER AND THE ACTING. I'M INTO CULT MOVIES BUT THIS WAS GARBAGE.

reply

I don't think the movie was meant to be taken that seriously so I don't see that as a valid criticism. I didn't find the acting bad, in fact compared to alot of the crap that comes out these days it was more than adequate. Clearly we are dealing with a lower budget film so I forgave some things. I was entertained from start to finish. I guess I would wonder why you watched the entire film if you hated it so much, clearly the story drew you in on some level.
