The Dog Bite

How the hell did they get that dog to bite "Ashley's" face? That sh-t looked very real... her reaction and everything was damn good if that was planned out!

That's exactly what I was thinking. I even paused the movie and put it in slow motion to see if it was somehow done digitally. It looked like it would have hurt but she didn't even have a mark on her nose. Anyone know if the dog really did bite her?

reply

I'm sure it was real. I read it somewhere, don't remember, don't have a link, but the dog really snapped at Schuyler Fisk, though I don't think it actually bit her and they left it in the movie.

I paused the DVD, the dog actally had her nose it it's mouth.

reply

that sure had to hurt, but she is a good actress and keep on with the scene.

reply

If you watch the DVD with the commentary, I think they said that it wasn't planned and that the dog really did try to bite her face. But she kept going so they left it in the movie.

Just by he fact that she says " but he's a sweet dog"or something like that, RIGHT before it attacks, it has to be scripted. Dogs used in movies are trained to do many different things, which "fake attacking" can be one of them.

LOST SPOILERS , IN THE ENDINGit was about the characters and purgatory

reply

No. They would never train a dog to fake bite someone in the face. The dog is clearly annoyed by the actress kissing him and snaps at her.
And what's fake about a dog actually biting DOWN on someones nose? And even if a dog would be trained to "fake bite", i doubt that any actor would dare to let a dog "fake bite" on his or her face like that. It would be much to risky.
The line the movie is just a "lucky" coincidence.

Edit: And just to put an end to that thought, i found this interview with Schuyler:

"AGW: Your character Ashley is really into saving animals and the environment. But, didn't the little dog in the film bite you?

Schuyler: (laughs) Can you hear my dog barking in the background? The dog's name was Andy and he was a real trouper. We had worked long hours and I was always picking him up and putting him down. In the scene where he bites me, I picked him up mid-hump...he's humping Catherine's leg! So I could feel bad for him. But, he'd get a little annoyed with me. He would start growling and then, finally, he'd had it and he bit me. Then it was like 'Okay...we won't do that anymore'. I was surprised. It was my first day of shooting. I had butterflies in my stomach. It was a real ice breaker."

I think it was unscripted. And the dog seems like it was picked because it wasn't well trained. It was just a bit of a "love bite", a warning, more than an attempt to tear her nose off.

Always gets a laugh from myself and whoever else is watching it with me, both in the movie and the trailer before other movies.

That definitely wasn't planned, so kudos to Schuyler for staying in character.

My inlaws have a German Shepherd that was a rescue, and really didn't like anyone getting in his face at first, and I saw that Shepherd do that to my other sister-in-law at a family gathering in circumstances that were very similar. He didn't really bite, but it was clearly a warning to say, "hey - I don't like that - get out of my face!"

Yeah, the dog had perfect timing, but you can tell from the look on her face that she wasn't expecting it
