Question about the mother

I don't quite understand how come the mother was still allowed to be in her life after she was let go. Even though she was the reason why they were discovered (bringing her and "Katie" to the welfare office),at the same time she seems equally responsible for what went on and for allowing it for so long as the father was. The mom was allowed to visit her and Katie was even allowed to stay with her awhile, which just made me aggravated. Katie was doing well with the people that she was with, so why she was allowed to be with her mom is beyond me. It made me even more aggravated that the mom was so rude to the people that were helping Katie. She did more harm then they did and they were just trying to help.

Laws were different back then

That really got on my nerves, too...that the mother was such a b**** to those people helping Katie. And I know the laws were different back then but I don't see where good common sense didn't come in when Katie's mom kept trying to interfere and just basically screw everything up...

Katie's mother was probably also a victim of Katie's father's dominating and violant behaviour. She was probably therefore overprotecting her child when it all was over. I don't know why they let her stay with her mother, as she probably need help too, but as stated; the rules were different back then.

i think her mother was slightly demented as well as her father although i dont really think she can be blamed for letting the abuse go on (very scared) i dont understand why she was so vindictave about ''kati'e'' being happy with her new parents...

In the eyes of Katie, the mother wasn´t the bad, you can see some scenes where she was glad to see her, she felt the situation less "juridical". I think her innocent view did more justice, as the mother was also a victim. It´s easy to feel for the child and blame the rest of the family, but when you´re so paralized by fear, there´s no reasons or logic anymore. This family lived constantly with the father in their backs, with the gun. About the others, they commit the big mistake in forcing her to speak, when it was so so difficult for her, without building the confidence first. At the stage of her development, she had so many difficulties to connect to people as a little child. She needed love first, then learning. I think they had a quite unprofessional (almost bad) attitude , she was already to be an adult and they hurried so much, what did they think they will get in some few months? I think they were blinded by their own ambitions, approachs, without seing the childs reality, so I think the mother had some reason to complain. I´m convinced that Genie developed a fear for learning the lenguage, and that´s because of Sandra Tannen, despite of her real love for Genie. That of her difficulties "are widely quote as evidence for the critical period hypothesis" is a crap.
