What really pissed me off was when that crazy man said genie couldn't use her sign language. That was her only way of comunicating! And how dare he put his hands on her just for eating her food they way she wanted to. Did social services take away their foster kids away when thay took genie out of there?

Genie could still talk, but this wasn't the first movie I've seen where parents of deaf kids thought talking in sign language was considered low-class. The TV movie with Stockard Channing as a deaf woman who became a stunt woman comes to mind. Sorry, I forget the name.
