multiple ways to win the game?

I beat the game with Bernard, the photographer guy, and Dave the default character. My friend said he won it a different way with sid(the musician), and that he made a tape recording of the green tentacle and him playing music and they mailed it to the number ont he TV. Does anyone remember this? Has anyone won the game with different characters, and/or are there different endings? For instance can you beat the game without Bernard? Without Bernard you can't do the radio tube thing, or fix the wires, but I wonder if you could still win the game without completing the specific tasks that utilize Bernards skills. Some other tasks off the top of my head I never did was, write the manuscript with the journalist. Also, does anyone know if you can fix the broken staircase my friend said you can fix it witht he right characters and the tool box and that at thet op of the stairs are three rooms, one that contains a statue of a deceased tentacle, one filled with edna's sex toys, and another with a fish tank and the name of the fish is sushi from Zak McKracken, can anyone verify this? When I heard that I almost fired it back up I got a copy for the PC last summer I am going to try to put it on my profile at myspace so people can download it. I will let you know if I figure out how to do it. Can someone please shed some light on the above inquiries because I am becoming obsessed witht he idea?

Easy. You can still beat the game without Bernard easily.
1) Win the game with Michael and whoever. Just get Michael to develop the plans and get Ed on your side. He will get rid of the purple tentacle in the lab, then storm in pick up the meteor and stuff it in the trunk of the edsel car. Do this quickly and set off the rocket on the car and you will beat the game.
2)Yes, you also use Syd or Razor - )both musicans) with the blank tape found in the loose panel (on the right side of the broken staircase room - by the way, the staircase can't be fixed can in fact never be fixed) to record Syd playing the piano in the piano room. Just place the cassette tape in the cassete recorder next to the TV. This will be an awesome mix, so after that, stop the recording and give the tape to the green tentacle. He will be stunned and give you his demo tape (He wants to start his own band he will tell you - and coincedently so does Syd) So watch the TV and type the adress with the typewriter (in the room with the man-eating plant) onto the envelope that contains the quarter (In Edna's safe) This is the tricky part: Before opening the envelope in the first place, stick it - and a jar of water into the microwave. This will make the envelope sticky, so the stamps will stick. I know this sounds crazy, but it works. By the way, the stamps come off of the package you recieve earlier in the game (with Ed's plans). Do all of this, and place the perfectly sealed envelope into the mailbox and close it. Don't forget to put the flag up and walk away for a minute or so. Eventually mail will come - a contract for you and the tentacle. Give it to the green tentacle and he will help you.
3)True, you can use Wendy also with the manuscript. The tricky thing here is she is the only one who knows how to read the manuscript. Just get her to use the manuscript with the typewriter (to make it elegidble) and send that manuscript to the publishers on TV (same way with the demo tape). This time you will get the meteor a contract, so just go to Fred's lab: show the purple tentacle the million dollar contract, he will let you through, and then proceed to give it to the meteor (after Fred talks to you.) He will end the madness. Also, enjoy this ending: It's a fun one. Try it!

Bottom line, you don't need Bernard, or certain characters. Just don't use Jeff. He's good for nothing. So is Dave, but he is the whole reason you're going to the mansion.

P.S I have never heard of the staircase thing, I think that's false. I've never heard of that, and I've tried everything! I love this game, it used to be my life! Sounds cool though, tell me if it ever works.

My friend at school said he found gas for the chainsaw, and he used the chainsaw to chop up the staircase. Too bad that was bull *beep*

if he did do that, then there's a 1000000000% chance he woke up afterwards. being the MM wizard/fanatic I am, I can tell you there is no such way to fix that staircase. And even if you could, it would be useless as it was only for the book shelves, just like in a real library.
