Why haven't more people heard of this?

I played this when I was a kid, and I thought it was beautifully made, fun, and original. I didn't find out until recently that there was a casette that came with it (and voices!). Unless that was a different version. I remember there was a book that came with it that you could write your spells in. And that there was an extra scene that you could get if you played it on difficult, but I was only about 10 or 11, so I didn't see it.

I've heard of this game, and played it, and finished it. Though I used the hint manual/diary/travelogue that came with the four game package. I found the games fairly difficult at the time, so I just had to. The Lucasarts Classics Collection it was called, I think. Came with Loom, Zak McCracken & the Alien Mindbenders, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and of course, my favourite, The Secret of Monkey Island. :)

I only learned today that a CD ROM version was released, containing better VGA colours, and those voices. IMDB trivia says this version has been lost though. But this being the 'net, I'm sure it's downloadable.

Yup, it is. ;)

There is actually a really big gaming community that is into these old games. Like them, I wish games like this were still produced today. Maybe a few still are, but you really have to dig for them.

Nostalgia setting in, I'm off to play Loom.

If you have the original version, apparently there's an upgrade to make it full voice and everything... I have the disk version, and have played the voice version.. some of the dialogue is different and a bit more is explained... its damned good. I love the game.. though completing it on expert mode only nets you about 2 seconds extra animation... seeing Cob die... oh well

That's what I had

I hope my disks still work because I want to play the games again in DOSBox

A truely gorgeous game! I remember playing this as a kid, and many many more times since. I had the lucasarts collection with zak mckraken and monkey island and all that so never got to hear the cassette till a few years ago. I've also played the full VGA version and while it's very pretty it loses something in the translation, the dialogue is altered slightly changing a few things for me, whole segments of back story are cut out (apparently due to constraints of the medium or something) and it's a shame.
A great example of altered character would be the dragon's reaction when you turn her horde into straw. In the original she says "oh very clever just turn it back when you're done" but in the voice version she says "hey! put that back!" or something along those lines... quite a different reaction if you ask me.
But it's a small nitpicking on my part.. mostly because the shere amount of times i've played that game I know it well.

Oh, hidden scene.. I remember thinking "er.. wth?" when I first saw that.. it's literally 2 seconds long! it's wierd.

why haven't more people heard of this game? I don't think it was marketed very well.. and it's an old game nowdays.. still.. it's a beautiful masterpiece

Yes, truly great, as most of LucasArt's old adventure games are. The atmosphere in Loom is just amazing!
