Why did it take him so long to die? He was shot 6 months previously from the trial, you the the gun wound wouldn't just sit there that long. He would either die in at least a couple of weeks, or live.

Archie was not shot 6 months from the trial. They were at an unknown location at the beginning (ie. 6 months ago) and then stopped at Plymouth and then sailed all the way to the West Indies which could've possibly taken a few months.
What? He was shot at the end of the fight against the Spaniards, when Sawyer and Wellard died, and then died 6 months later at the trial.
No. A considerable amount of time has passed when we first see the Renown in the storm (ie. 6 months ago) and the end of the fight against the Spaniards.
We see the Renown in the storm and then the next scene we're at Plymouth Sound. A month (or maybe longer) could've passed between these two locations.
Then the Renown sails from Plymouth Sound to the West Indies. Sailing from England across the Atlantic Ocean south to the West Indies would definitely take up 5 weeks at least.

I'll take a wild guess and say they took 2 months to reach Plymouth.
Ship docks at Plymouth Sound = 4 months ago
They could've taken a week to replenish supplies, repairs,etc..
Ship set sails from Plymouth = 3.75 months ago
Considering how ill-disciplined the crew of the Renown were, I don't think they'd sail very fast... plus any storms, enemy ships they encountered across the Atlantic Ocean.. I'll say they take about 3 to 4 months to reach Samana Bay (let's say 3 and a half months)

Capture of the fort, battle with slaves could've took a day.
Battle onboard the Renown(ie.Archie shot) = 6 days ago
Archie did not take 6 months to die. He probably died a week or maybe 10 days after he was shot.
