His career, which was never too good, is ruined forever. Plus he has a serious drinking problem...
Late answer, but here's my thought.
Given the butch he made of the whole situation, it's likely that he would be beached and live on half pay the rest of his career. He's getting on in years for a lieutenant, so his chances of promotion are slim to none. His career is effectively finished.
