the hats

I am interested in the costumes, particularly the hats, which seem to change style from episode to episode. Sometimes they are worn pointed to the front, sometimes with the points to the side, etc. Also, when Hornblower was a midshipman, he sometimes wore the bicorne hat (with the points over his ears) and sometimes the round-brimmed hat with the high crown. Is there a reason to these variations?
