The Ending of Movie is not Typical

I saw the movie and I realy like it much , It has different ending than typical horror movies of the family who live in remote or haunted houses. In many movies the family members such Father, Mother , Son and Daughter all survived and other peoples like Cops, or Electrician or maid etc usually became the victim of Demons or Monsrters and in the end, Haunted House usually is burning.

In this movie Father died, Mother was attacked by demon (assuming died) , Daughter and son both Trap in Tunnel by Demon in Daughter's love intrest form and the real guy trapped in haunted home where movie end leaving many questions about them, i.e unpredictable.

I think it's atypical simply because it's not a happy ending.

A *beep* of horror movies end this way, with the main character/characters thinking they've escaped, and then.. NO!

reply

Ah, but it's not just the main characters who die at the end, but the whole world dies as well.

Great ending! When I saw this, everyone with me didn't catch the ending - they thought the characters had escaped.

Yes, like the main review on IMDB states, you need your imagination to fill some holes in. Or the film feels quite disjointed. Problem is this is not a domineering skill amongst cinema goers who want the whole story on a plate and not much thinking.

The demons could have been shown more, I would have liked to have seen more scares from the trio of demons casting darkness over the inhabitants. But it all worked, just not my favourite ghost tale as the execution was just not scary enough.

The end scene, no-one actually left the house, no-one escaped as Paquin and her brother fall foul to the demon's trickery as they head into the tunnel and the darkness - just a metaphor for being sent to hell. We see Paquin's lover boy show up but the demon has already taken her, and we also quickly see the demons trap the boy in the house.

As I said, more instances of the demons might have allowed further scares, only a few scenes scared viewers. The 'what is under the bed' idea while cliched did work as we see it through the innocent eyes of a child.

Have to agree on the holes, but that was how the script was written: why is this, what is that, why did that happen. The writers wanted the viewers to invest their imagination in the film but that does not do well on box office takings.

so the grandfather gets killed by the darkness as well? i always thought Carlos killed him (off screen) before going to the house ( i would if he stabbed me with a needle)

What makes you think the whole world dies? If that were the case, why would they need to trick the kids?

reply

Unpredictable, my ass. The ending is totally in line with what can expect from modern horror movies.

reply

I'd have to agree. The "doomed" ending is more common now than happier endings.

reply

It's not atypical at all. Most horror movies these days end in a downer.

reply

Exactly.

Main characters escape, but then their pupae dilate to all black. yeah very original.

I saw this in the theater when it came out. I liked the unhappy bleak ending. It wasn't expected. The ending makes the film stand out. The bad hacking from the studios making it Pg 13, when American had a lot of bad Pg 13 films out at the time lumped it in as one of those forgettable films.

Watching it recently and coming here to see a ton of hate for it, seems odd, it isn't a great or terrible film but contagious internet bashing over a mediocre horror with an odd ending is just,...odd.

The director did move on to do better things, though.
