Did anyone ever think...

That at the end, the daughter never actually broke the window for her and her brother to get out and that they were tricked to think that they were outside of the house to get in the car. That way they would be willing to go into the dark. I think the darkness was strong enough to not let them leave the house.
Just my theory....
