I remember reading her mom wanted more money. I think her mom was her manager then, and maybe still is... I'm not sure. Hilary was a rising talent then. I don't think the money thing was personal. She speaks very highly of her experiences there. But she might've made a Katherine Heigl-type mistake, where she left a show too early in its popularity.

The show was being proposed for a change of venue to the ABC network. That means a lot more viewers, which also means that Disney would have made a lot more money. Which in turn means that Hilary was entitled to try for a lot more money.

She was making $15,000 dollars per episode on Lizzie McGuire. For the new contract, her mother asked for her daughter to be paid $100,000 per episode for the new show (peanuts compared to what other stars are making). Disney said no, and mysteriously never even tried to haggle. Instead, they just scrapped the project.

I agree, ABC should've haggled. I mean, Lizzie McGuire was a hit and had a movie behind it. That's pretty impressive. I can't think of a show since on Disney Chanel (besides HSM) that's made it into theaters. Plus Hilary was becoming pretty popular then. Her movie career was just starting up.
However I suppose ABC was worried the show wouldn't succeed in prime time or be worth the effort. I think had the show followed them into high school, it would've been worth it. Especially now that shows like The Middle, Modern Family and Fresh of the Boat have nailed the family-show formula. But The Muppets didn't make it, and they also had a successful franchise behind them. You never know, and I wish Hilary had just taken the small sum and then haggled during the second season. I'm sure she was making major bucks with her film career though and that's why she walked.

The Hannah Montana movie was in theaters, I think.

Oh yes, sorry. Forgot about that one too.
