Disappointing.

First off, I'm both a fan of zombie flicks and Japanese cinema so when I saw this at the rental store it seemed like something I couldn't pass up. I put the DVD in with some enthusiasm, but was thoroughly disappointed.

The plot was weak, the characters hollow and the movie basically lacked in every department aside from it's gore. I had no problems with the acting, except for the Americans playing military personnel, who were absolutely terrible. The splatter was nice enough, but a little too much of it was just zombies shoving fistfuls of bloody meat in their mouths. Could have used a little more plot, suspense, action, and a budget of more than $10,000.

On a sidenote, Biozombie still remains the best Japanese zombie flick I have seen. If you are reading this message then you probably have some interest in the genre, so definitely check that one out.

Uhmmm. . . Last time I check Bio-Zombie wasn't a Japanese movie, but a Chinese one.

Of course that's beside the point as the same reasons you listed for not liking Junk are still easily applied to Bio-Zombie.

reply

Hehe oh yeah it was a Hong Kong one, my bad. Sucks to make mistakes on a movie board when the answers are a mere click away! =p

Haven't seen it for a while, but Biozombie was way more fun and so much more entertaining than Junk. Bz wasn't really trying to be serious and it blended the comedy and horror genres so well. It was refreshing change of pace from the other zombie movies I had seen.

I guess Junk was trying to blend like a crime or gangster film with zombies, but it just didn't work. "Versus" did a better job of having zombies and gangsters and even some comedy, but by the end it turned into like a Highlanderesque sci-fi thing which was pretty silly.

I don't know why, but Bio-Zombie didn't really do it for me. The main reason, i think, was that I just didn't find any of the characters likable at all. . . Which I guess is alright since they all turn into zombies anyway.

Mind you, I'm not saying I loved Junk. I did like Junk's locale though. It reminded me of Resident Evil 2 for some reason.

Sure the movie is kind of cheesy and i expected less than zero because of its japanese origin. I am not into slapstick, so i was positively surprised that there is something from Japan that`s not crazed out but almost a decent zombieflick.

I was delighted that the zombies were slow. Real slow. A big plus these days where zombies tend to be olympic runners.

The gore was... there... but in 2004 (or 2000) there is more to it than just grab your fist into some red matter and put it in your mouth. Also the chewing was a bit strange. When they eat some meat it looks like they are chewing gum.
Also it was a bit odd that every zombie seemed to jump at the same position: the throat. Okay, this is funny, one or two times... but when the sixth zombie does it again the same way his predecessors did - it gets boring.

But overall... a decent zombieflick. If it had a Romero-Like score (Goblin!) there would certainly have been the suspense that it needed to be really cool.
With all the *beep*-Pseudo-Zombie-Movies released these days (don`t have to call names, you know what i`m talking about) it was a refreshing effort by a surprisingly tamed down Japanese Guy.

I only saw junk because all of my friends said it was awesome... they arent my friends anymore. i liked dawn of the dead 78 and o4 i liked night of the living dead, i liked 28 days later. but im telling you right now THIS F---ING MOVIE BLOWS!!!!!! though Im quite amazed that the writer came up with a "title" as well as a "description of the film" with the same word. i would have changed the name to "I S*** ON A FILM GENRA" or "JIZZ ON A FILM NEGATIVE" or ooh oh how about "STEAMING COIL" ooh cmon say it with me "STEEEEeeeEEEAMING COOOoooOOOIL" it has sort of a ring to it that could only created from hearing fingernails scratching on a blackboard. How about the score right when The main title appears. sounds a little like the Terminator 2 opening credits.

I think alot of people feel like you. I did for about 3 or 4 minutes, then when I realized what the movie actually was, I enjoyed it. The movie leads you to believe it was be a typical Yakuza flick with almost a Reservior Dogs beginning, then the movie takes a hard left, thats when the movie met my expectations. The movie is cheesy. It is gory. It is low budget. If you want a high budget, eye candy movie, dont watch this. If you want to watch a cheap gorefest with cheap zombies, watch this. If you go into it expecting nothing, then you can really enjoy this movie. The only part I really didnt like was the SuperZombie chick. Everything else I liked.

Maybe I should have had different expectations, but I was really disappointed by Junk. It's got a premise that promises all-out gory zombie action, but the movie hardly delivers. There are dozens of zombies in the picture, but little in the way of actual action that one usually expects in a zombie movie (i.e. lots of head bashes, gory gunshots to the head and torso), and the movie takes too long to get going.

I think the most interesting aspect of the movie has to be how much it looks and feels like an Italian zombie film. The undead in this movie usually tend to have their heads bowed down and they move at an infinitesimal pace by even zombie standards, much like those in Lucio Fulci's films. There's even a zoom shot on a maggot-infested corpse!

In fact, the movie feels like a pastiche of everything that was wrong with Fulci's movies: bad acting, bad writing, often unconvincing make-up effects, and a complete lack of logic, with none of the positive elements that Fulci's movies boasted (Fulci's movies usually had strong atmosphere and a good, eerie use of location).

This is just a terrible movie. I actually hated this movie much more than House of the Dead. Never in my life have I hated a movie so much. In my humble opinion this movie needs a pity point just to net it's self a one out of ten.

Surprised how many haters there are for this movie. It's not great, but to agree with an online review - it's a decent zombie popcorn movie. It's an alright time killer.

Dawnrocks04,
Apparently you've missed Dead Life, which is closer to what you're describing. It's a completely worthless no budget American backyard zombie movie shot on 8mm made as an excuse for a dick joke someone probably came up with while drunk or high. Junk is miles ahead of it in quality and entertainment value. Same goes for sequel in name only Day of the Dead 2: Contagium but with more budget. The worst Japanese zombie movie is still Stacy, which had a great premise, hack exploitation director, zero budget and 7 day shooting schedule and it shows.

Just saw this movie and thought it was pretty entertaining. Not the greatest by any means but still enjoyable.

I just watched this film myself.

It was ok but it lacked enough zombie action, the amount of zombies were there but they really didn't do much and it would of been much better if it was night time, that factory would of been so spooky! and the characters kind of just seemed to be able to enter / leave the building so easy.

Overall it's crappyness made me find it enjoyable and the female was pretty sexy.

Also I liked the super zombie chick, very unnecessary but added to the charm of the film.

I CANT BELEIVE YOU ARE ALL SAYING THIS, for an extremely low budget movie, JUNK is extremely high in entertainment value and is terribly underrated. I can't beleive ppl like WILD ZERO more than this, now THAT is OVERRATED!

I hated it, it was lacking all of the many numerous things that can make a zombie movie great alone, such as:

Scares
Origonality
Plot
Comedy
Kick ass stupidly over the top but loveable none the less plot/character/action (It attempted it, the chick went super Saijin for christ sakes and failed)
Japans greatest ever Jet Rock band

Nothing in the film hadn't been done better before, even in flicks with lower budgets.

The title says it all.
Do Fastforward to 00:60:00 and go from there. Superzombies are always fun to watch.

Give me my ninety minutes back, please.
