Am I alone?

Is there anyone else here who liked this movie and saw it for the very funny workplace comedy it was?

While parts are certainly amaturish, it definately had a particular charm, and parts definately had me laughing out loud. Not a bad film, kept me interested enough to keep watching.

Yay! Someone replied! I agree that parts definitely were a little amateur, and I'll admit that at times I felt like the audience was intended to be a sort of non-paid therapist in basically having to experience so much very real emotional crap from one guy, but there were moments that totally had me dying of laughter. Like, the whole "lusting for my bed" thing - I can SO relate to that, and having long, emotional conversations with a person's voice mail! LOL

it was just a funny movie in general

I thought it was very funny and I liked it a lot. I'm not sure why everyone hates it so much...

I enjoyed it alot the first time I saw it on IFC. So much in fact, that I bought it. I watch it quite often. The part with the printer is so funny I almost peed my pants laughing the first time I saw it.

OMG - The printer! This movie just has an insight into a certain reality that gets me every time. Very relatable!

I just finished watching it five minutes ago. I thought it was great...very odd, but funny.

I think this movie is great. I've seen it several times and find humor in it in each viewing. Kornbluth is certainly not your typical protagonist, or even anti-hero, but boy is he a great comedy writer!

I've never even worked in a office like in that movie (or like on tv on the office or in dilbert etc.) BUT I thought it was hillarious. Maybe It's just the mood i was in or maybe it's just cuz im greatly amused by things that take place in an enviroment I've never worked but seem to be how they are (also dead like me the whole temp office worker theme was funny as crap to me)

I'm suprised more people didn't find it hillarious (based on the overall rating here on imdb) But I give it a 5 out of 5

reply

I'm also surprised more people didn't like this movie. I definitely wouldn't say that someone would have had to work in an office to get it. Most of what he goes through is relatable to just about any job. He's actually a guy who hates his life and really wants to be doing something else, i.e. writing his novel. But also he's just a loser, and that's funny.

I LOVED Dead Like Me, too! But great shows are often cancelled unduly!

My favorite part is when he's trying to type the letters and he keeps screwing around...like making his boss repeat "um.." over and over, lol. And when he puts in the Judas Priest (I think) tape and plays it backwards. It was also hilarious when the glue explodes all over the letters and he shoves all the stuff into the box and runs away.

This is the beauty of the SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL. Films that most people wouldn't care for, have the opportunity to be made. I liked it, because I like Josh Kornbluth's work. I heard that his performance of HAIKU TUNNEL live on stage was a much more entertaining experience.

reply

That would be so cool to see him live! Do you know if he started his career as a stand-up?

I watched about the first half of it then had to turn it off. Although the ideas for the movie were good, I think that the script could have used a little bit more polishing. The only real failure I saw in the film was with Josh Kornbluth himself. As I said, the concept was good, and the script was ok, but I think he made a big mistake choosing himself to play the main character. His lack of film acting experience was obvious (at least in my opinion) and his lack of presence really hurt the film for me. I think that all of the additional folks in the film did a fine job, but Josh's work was like taking someone who has only ever acted on a public access cable show and putting them into a feature film. Had he chosen someone with a bit more in the acting chops department to play the main character, I think this film could have been a bigger success

This is actually one of my favorite movies - definitely in my top 20. I love the wink-and-a-nod campiness that many write off as amateurish. And having been raised by a lawyer, grown up watching friends become lawyers, and now working with them (I'm in marketing, NOT a lawyer), I've always found it bitingly witty. I've found that my attorney friends don't care for it much, but then, they're being made fun of, so maybe they can't see the humor in it. I have found, though, that other people in a similar boat as myself also find it hysterical.
Maybe this is a movie for They Might Be Giants fans, wanna-be writers and lovers of great sarcasm who hate working with actual people. I'm a full-fledged member of that club, so not only do I love it, I wish I had written it.

This is one of my favorite movies. I never get tired of watching it, the characters are wonderfully funny, but honest caricatures and the situations very Dilbert-like.

You're definitely not alone. I watched this with my girl and we both thought it was hilarious. Honestly, it's almost as good as Office Space. Great flick.
