shareTry french movie "Indochine" avec French actress Catherine Deneuve. Before the Chinese and the Americans the Vietnam was a French colony for long time. I think the DVD was released for American market too.

Don't say something you don't know guy . Back to school and learn History again plz
Whale Rider is the movie you want
"The weak deserve their fate"
Yes it was a French colony for a long time but not before the Chinese... The Chinese dominated that region for roughly ten centuries until the Nam Viet won their independance only to lose it again to the french, then the Japanese, back to the French, then split into north and south Vietnam, then dominance by north Vietnam, and now it is a unified socialist country... in an overview generally speaking. You can get the same info from wikipedia which is generally roughly accurate enough to get the gist of things.
shareIn addition to The New World, any other Terrence Malick film, especially Days of Heaven.
share The Vertical Ray of the Sun
The Smell of Sweet Green Papaya
Three Seasons
All understated. None simple.
City of Ghosts is very good, as mentioned...but it's filmed and takes place in Cambodia, not Thailand. It's Mat Dillon's directorial debut.
Heaven & Earth, also mentioned previously...the 3rd installment of Oliver Stone's Vietnam trilogy. A true story about a Vietnamese woman who's G.I. husband (Tommy Lee Jones)actually brings her back to the U.S. with him, and the drama that follows.
There's an excellent film called "Green Dragon", with Forest Whitaker and Patrick Swayze, about Vietnamese refugees who had to stay at Camp Pendleton, California in the 70's.
Terrence Malick's "The Thin Red Line".
The Killing Fields.
The Quiet American (2002) with Michael caine and Brendab Fraser. It is also set in Vietnam and based on a Graham Greene novel. It is good but Beautiful Country blew me away and touched me deeper.
shareFrom off the top of my head...
Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall, and Spring and The Motorcycle Diaries. Both have beautiful imagery.

Two movies I would whole heartedly recommend, though not set in Vietnam, are:
Never cry wolf
http://imdb.com/title/tt0086005/
The Snow walker:
http://imdb.com/title/tt0337721/
Both films are based on Farley Mowat stories and very much quite similar in terms of pacing, etc to The Beautiful Country, they have some very nice cinematography as well.
the first film Stars Charles Martin Smith and was made back in the 80's. After he did this film he became friends with Farley Mowat and then later on wanted to make his own film from some of Mowat's stories, an dthat's when he made The snow walker, which is quite good.
Never cry wolf centers more around one main character and what he learns throughout his journey studyin wolves. The snow walker is centered around two characters and trying to survive after a plane crash.
I agree, Indochine is one of my favorite movies.
shareStrong films about refugees:
For a moment, Freedon http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1296337/
