What is the time period? --anachronism?

If it's set in late 1990's then the line, "If I don't dye my hair I'll look like Shrek" is an anachronism as Shrek hadn't been released yet.

There is a thread that it's set in the 2001-2002 period, but then as it points out, there is a lot of evidence that the show takes place in the late 90's. So which is it?

Thanks.

The show takes place at the current time of when the show aired, so 2001-2002. It was an accurate depiction of what being in college at the time was like.

It's pretty clear it's set in the 2001-02 year. Of course, being so close in the 90's era, you're going to get a ton of comparisons.

There was one gal from Undeclared that tried to get into the business and for whatever reason never succeeded. There are a ton of people who just never made it past this, but obviously this was a pretty good stepping stone for a lot of actors.

Having started my freshman year of college in the fall of 2002, I can confirm that this show is pretty damn accurate to the time period.

I'm watching it through on Netflix right now and couldn't figure out why exactly it was so appealing to me. It felt extremely familiar. Then, I realized that the pop culture references were basically verbatim what was going on when I lived in the dorms in college.

In the episode "The Perfect Date" the movie "Freddy Got Fingered" is mentioned several times, so that would put it at 2001.

What evidence?

It's a period piece, although it was made in 2001 they set it in 1999.

It was set in 2001. Many of the references to current films and music were made and the release dates were mostly from late 2000 to early 2001. Thus Fall semester of 2001 would be the setting.
