How did the Allies win?

With so many dodgy characters in the Allied forces, with no apparent redeeming features, how ever did they beat the Nazis?

There's wierdoes everywhere, all the time. Everything proceeds despite plans gone wrong. See CATCH 22, take a look at GOOD SOLDIER SCHWEIK, and even a novel about the Thirty Years War called SIMPLICIOUS SIMPLICISSIMUS.

Everyone goes a bit weird under pressure - it brings out all that residual strangeness. Even Guy starts looking up his ex-wife. If anything, this is a protest against the possibility of an army being uniform and orderly - it can never escape the uniqueness of the individual.

The Russians.

They took more casualties than all the Allies combined.

Remember, Waugh wrote a satire. A masterpiece, but a satire nonetheless.

I heartily recommend that one read the novels. The Everyman's Library edition is best since it restores all of Waugh's deletions. Also consult the remarkable Companion to Sword of Honour at abbotshill.freeserve.co.uk.

I would add American industrial might to your Russians.

But the OP's point is well taken ... there were some zany characters in the Queen's army ... and politics and ambition and glory seekers were everywhere!
