The why of the title

"The Day the World Ended" is the title of a 1955 SciFi B-movie which the boy Ben had been watching at some critical time in his life. That movie had a weird looking mutant creature in it that was some kind of a model for the creature in this movie. I think the idea is Ben takes things from that movie and projects them into reality.
The title was even questionable in that 1955 movie.

Somewhere I read that this was a remake of the film from the 50's, however the 50's version evidently was a post-apocalyptic show, and much different.
Evidently, that was the movie the boy was watching. The monster was similar.
I had no idea when we watched this from netflix that it was an HBO made for TV movie, but I think it was quite fun.

Strangely enough... The movie the boy is watching in this film is an amalgam of: The Brain Eaters (with new narration), The Day the World Ended, and new shots original to this film in B&W with a new monster. The monster seen in the fake footage does not resemble the monster from the original The Day the World Ended in any way.

The title of the original film was quite accurate. In the first minute or so we are shown stock footage and told in narration that a nuclear war has destroyed civilization and killed almost everybody... The creature in the film is a human being that has transformed into a twisted armored monster by the direct effects of massive radiation exposure.
