This movie is damn weird.

I stumbled across this movie on cable and am a embarassingly big fan of Sammi Cheng so I thought I would give it a chance.

It is a weird, incoherent film with nice vivid colors and Sammi Cheng. Unfortunately, it's also one of her many movies where the character in the story continually tell Sammi she is ugly. It's irritating enough that I stopped watching it and won't watch it agian.

I think it also has something to do with the fact that I don't really understand anything about Lunar New Year.

Has anyone else seen this?

I have just seen it. I wasn't even aware of the term 'Lunar New Year' or that it has anything to do with the movie I just watched.

I thought it was funny. It made me wish I understood the actors rather than rely on the subtitles, as well. One of the devices was to continually repeat the same dialogue or same sequence of words, so I only saw Sammi being told that she was ugly as part of that. A lot of things cracked me up, such as the Historian writing down criticisms of the Emperor even as he spoke them aloud, or the way the Prime Minister delivered each of his lines.

I don't agree with the part about it being incoherent though. It was rather easy to follow, I thought, as soon as I realized it was more of a fairy tale than anything else.

comic fable is the best way to describe it. But it is a touch weird at times and very silly too, but not in a bad way.
