The soundtrack.. (blackmail), why so loud?

I am watching the film right now, and I am really confused why the soundtrack is so loud, especially around the 30-40 minute mark (the blackmailing scene). So I am really confused, cause I am watching the film without subtitles, and I am having a hard time figuring out what is being said.
So my question is why would P.T. Anderson do this?
Also what's with the pudding?

nevermind I got the pudding thing, but still aren't quite sure why he used the loud music though.

I believe Anderson did this to be within the anxious, bizarre mind of Barry Egan. The sounds are supposed to be overwhelming and loud, and light has the same effect in the movie. As someone who suffers from anxiety, I think the technique is brilliant and spot-on.

Very effective indeed, I felt like I was going to have an anxiety attack myself just watching that scene.
