What's really messed up..

Merriam's mother hated the fact that her daughter was with an American from the start, and after they got married, Merriam went nuts, and partied it up in Vegas, which led to the divorce. Her mother probably really hates Americans now, and is convinced that her daughter was corrupted, without putting blame on Merriam herself. Goes to show the chain of events that lead to ignorance.

I'm not condoning Meriam's partying which caused the divorce, but considering the fact that she grew up in an uptight environment (I know, Bahrain is more "liberal" than some other countries, but still) she was bound to go wild to some degree after coming here. That's a major problem with strictness, it often leads to rebellion and the like.
But it really sucks that they divorced after all the sh*t they went through to be together.

Meriam in real life was Saudi which is a much stricter. The reality is the religion issue played a huge role in why they broke up. In order to marry a Muslim woman you have to convert ( something I would not do). Also her political stance after 9/11 did not help ( going home for a year because of supposed anti-Islamic feelings by the American People). There is little doubt that few people ( if anyone) in Saudi Arabia would marry her because of what she did, and because of the fear of Honor Killings and the bad publicity that would have happened if she would have gotten killed, it was probably easier for everyone involved ( the Saudi and US Governments and Meriam) to just go back to Las Vegas ( or wherever she chose) and simply disappear.
