Detroit

Without knowing prior to watching, Who else could tell that it was set in Detroit before they show Nick Tellis sitting on the bench in Windsor with the D-skyline in the background or before Lieut. Oak announces that he was "Detroit Metropolitan Police Dept" near the end?

reply

i figured it to be the Motor City when i watched it the first time. i usually play close attention to the city a movie is trying to "replicate" or is actually shooting in.

Truth, being from craptown Iowa, I thought this was Chicago or Detroit, it has a grity un-coast feel. Something here is diry or mean which is different to things you see in movies on the coast(s).

I know exactly what you're saying, I thought the setting was Detroit in the beginning of the movie when Nick is chasing the junkie around. I also heard that a lot of the movie was filmed in Canada.

reply

Yes a lot of it was filmed in Toronto. The first part of the movie that you mention with him chasing the junkie actually looks like regent park or some other ghetto part of Toronto. So I knew right away it was at least partly filmed in T.O

reply

The chase in the beginning of the film gave me and the OP an impression that the film is set in Detroit. I wouldn't have guessed that the beginning was filmed in Toronto though.

reply

I thought it was Hell...

Does Detroit really look as chitty as that? If I lived there I would've hanged myself, and the same goes for the ghetto in toronto,

reply

The scene at the beginning could also be Jayne and Finch aka "the jungle" or Scarborough or indeed as someone else said Regents park

Another place that definitely looked like Detroit was outside the Widow's house

reply

yes this was 10 yrs ago and its been that bad for the whole time since and from about 1997 before that nice city like chicago!

reply

They show reports with "Grand Ave" pretty early on - that's the point I figured it was Detroit.

reply

Yeah I could kinda tell.
