Narc

reply

Hahahaha... Agreed... Training Day had more overacting than a neighborhood production of Death of a Salesman. Narc was much more gritty and adeptly acted.

reply

LOL, that is true. Narc is extremely gritty and grimy. Training Day is a bit more upbeat.

Narc all the way

"Narc makes Training Day look like Police Academy 6.... "

lol that was cold rammy

I actually worked at the movies when Narc came out and it totally BOMBED!
it was in my theater only two weekends and no one came to see it like at all. Saturday night opening weekend I was all alone in there. But what do people know...

I have to say that Narc is not only more unique and gritty it has better actors doing better acting with a better storyline.

Narc wins hands down. but i still like training day.

The alien jesus collective stole my name.

Traning day is way better brillant acting by Denzel and well played out story. Just because Narc is more violent and gritty doesnt make it better. the storyline bored me. only watched it cos Ray liotta is in it.

You guys gotta be kidding right? Training Day owns Narc.

reply

Narc has Training Day beat in spades as far as realism is concerned. I would stake everything I own on it. This is like "The wire vs. The Shield" debate. If you want entertainment and asction that's close to reality but goes a little over the top for artistic purposes both The Shield and Training Day win. But for gritty realism in the portrait of police work and/or 'the streets' both Narc and The Wire win hands down. It is that simple. I never put down people's opinions because, well, to each his own but this isn't an opinion. Narc is more realistic than Training Day, fact. The Wire is more realistic than the Shield, fact. Now, which is 'better' in terms of entertainment value? That is a matter of opinion.

Well said. + 1

I *just* finished watching Narc in its entirety for the first time. Coincedentally, I watched Training Day last night.

Narc offers more realism, and much better acting (Oscar to Denzel, what in the world were they thinking?...oh right, "blackfest" at the oscars. Halle Berry won for a soft-core porn flick. what a load of *beep* And what has Sydney Poiteir done in the last 40 years to get a "lifetime" award, other than being Black?)

Training Day was that hype movie that was put out there to sell, with a truly unbelievable, yet clever plot. But that's why some consider it the more 'entertaining' of the two. Because its unrealistic. Its more of a fantasy film than a crime-drama.

Narc is a great crime-drama/thriler. An overall better piece of work. Very dark and edgy. It didn't rely on a soundtrack or cameos to sell itself like Training Day.

As much as I enjoyed Training Day (and I do every time I watch it) I have to give it to Narc all the way, without question.

blackfest? smh racist piece of *beep*

you are all good people lol

Narc, Ray Liotta was awsome in this movie.

reply

Both good but training day gets my vote.

reply

Well obviously most people on the Narc message borad are going to think Narc is better. You'd probably get the opposite if you asked this on the training day board

Training Day was good because the acting was phenomenal. Denzel's monologue at the end of the film is one of my fav. segments in any movie of the past few years.

However, the acting is just as fantastic in Narc, and the film itself dwarfs Training Day. This is coming from a TD fan, but it simply doesn't have the same scope or power than Narc does.

I put Training Day in my top 10 list, and it is the only movie on that list that I cant honestly say is one of the 10 best that Ive seen. IMO, it is my favorite movie right there with Blow, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Gotti. These last 3 are in my top 10 and I think are 3 of the best movies objectively speaking. Back to my point, Training Day is quite possibly my personal favorite movie of all time. It is unrealistic and I admit that. My Criminal Justice teacher refused to watch it all 5000 times I asked him in the last 2 years because of how unrealistic it is. So, I havent seen Narc but am a big fan of these types of movies as you can see (Gotti, Blow, Training Day)-- I love crime movies. So basically I decided to make this post out of the excitement I have to watch Narc after reading this thread. I will post back whenever I see it, just to give my input to whether it tops my favorite movie of all time or not. Im just glad I got the movie pass from Blockbuster so it will probably only be a few days until I watch it : )

reply

both are great but Training Day is way better.

dude, i don't think you can say how much you like 'these kinds of films' when you haven't seen NARC.

BLOW & GOTTI are not even in the same genre as NARC.

TRAINING DAY was fun as hell, entertaining on every repeat, but it's day & night compared to NARC.

As much as I liked Training Day I thought Ethan Hawke performance was weak. I mean at the end when Alonzo is going for the gun Ethan is actually smiling. His expressions seem way out of sort.

Jason Patric is a solid actor who belongs to the "less is more school" he say so much with a curious look, you just know what he's thinking. The fact that he didn't want to believe the truth about Oak and actually beat the perps more was so real.

Ray and Denzel were both solid, I can't say enough about how good they were I've known cops like them always on the edge.

I believe that the edge goes to Narc.

NARC NARC NARC a thousand times NARC.

Training Day was a weak, meandering, tepid movie draped around a phenomenal performance. It was a tie for the greatest "carrying" job I have seen by a leading man in recent memory (see: Depp, Johnny, Pirates of the Carribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl). MAN, was Ethan Hawke ever great! HAHAHAHAHA, just kidding, I'm talking about Denzel, of course (not trying to pick on Ethan, but I feel like he really phoned this one in--could be that he just can't hold his own opposite one of the greatest actors in the world).

But Narc was an unbelievable, visceral, RAW rush of energy--totally unrelenting and as powerful as anything I've seen in the past several years. In Narc, Patric & Liotta's performances don't "save" or "carry" the story--they augment it. For my money, with all respect to Dirty Harry, this is the greatest cop movie ever made, bar none.

That rug really tied the room together, did it not?

reply

I have to say Narc, since Hawke is a pitiful actor and ruined Hamlet. You have to really screw up to do that. Denzel carried him to the finish line in TD.

"When blood is shed, there are no heroes."

reply

The first half of Narc is awesome, but from there it goes down. Training Day is maybe too stylish, too "classy", but Narc is equally flawed in its abuse of flashback images, distorted visuals and shadowy environments. Kind of a modernistic urban version of what Woody Allen mocks with his "directors film in black and white to look artistic" pun in Celebrity.

Training Day excels both as a piece of entertainment and as a coherent, if over the top, story. Narc is more realistic but that only makes its plot flaws all the more apparent. Still, Narc deserved better exposure.

reply

I really wasn't impressed or very interested in Training Day. In all honesty I even dozed off at a couple parts. Narc kept me watching the whole time...

Now. . . bring me that horizon

reply

I have to agree. Narc's story is far more indepth and compelling than Training Day. Also, Ray Liotta was the shi t in it! Jason Patric did an amazing job as well, and Joe Carnahan did a great job directing it!

i think Narc wins hands down.

I was looking forward to Training Day however I found that it was overall a disappointment. I sat down to watch Narc and was transfixed for the whole of the movie. I know there are a lot of posts with regard to inconsidencies however it had me all the way - and that is what makes a good movie.

reply

I really liked both movies but I thought Training Day was waaay better. Denzel Washington is awesome and the non-stop action makes it better for me.

reply

Yep, Training Day was toss compared to NARC. I picked up Narc to rent hearing nothing about it and taking a chance. I was blown away by the opening chase and I could feel my heart pounding and the adrenalin kicking in from this fantastic and disturbing (needling a passer by) scene. I feel Liotta is a class actor who is underrated, but when given a role like this he shines. Its no Goodfellas but its certainly worth the rental money I paid. Go get it.

reply

maybe you're on the doze while in Training Day? jk dude. but its all out action thriller with training day, but with narc is touch deep inside narc.police-life in detroit. liotta vs danzel is v. hard to judge, but supporting actor is hand down to jason patric. He knows what it takes to become a brute-underpressure-cracked cop. Again, both are decent movies.

reply

Narc for sure. Its unrelenting in its brutality. Marvelous acting from Liotta.

reply

My biggest problem with Training day was Ethan Hawkes character being so damn naive. I mean who the *beep* becomes a cop in LA and is suprised by the politics and corruption? I live just outside of Dallas Tx and we've had all kinds of issues here, so I can only begin to imagine LA or New York for that matter.

reply

well i just watched both of these movies back to back ( neither for the first time)

and im gonna hvae to say that while narc was a good story that was done quite well, it was missing something that training day had....

training day may be the worse movie if you are talking just about it being realistic and not hollywood produced.

HOWEVER

Training day is easily 100 times more entertaning to watch then narc

reply

Haha ... Narc of course man ... NARC all the way...
Training day was for teens ... with the bling blings and all the rest... Training day was pretty lame ... and very predictable ...
