Why the Hate For Gandolfini??

I personally thought he played the part very well but most posters think otherwise. Can anyone tell me specifically what was wrong with his performance?? Or did you just not like the character and therefore think the actor is just as pathetic?

reply

I personally think he did fine in this film. I prefer to watch him in this role after 20 seasons of The Sopranos. But I'm interested as well.

I am the prototype

i kept expecting him to say, "and now, he swims with the fishes"

he sounded like the mafia boss from The Simpsons.

but i ain't a hater, he brought the most to the film.

Its funny because the main thing I noticed all movie was how different his accent was and how he didnt sound like Tony Soprano at all

Personally, I think he is a mediocre actor. A character actor is what they used to call the type. He constantly whined that his role on The Sopranos typecast him but I say that his acting typecasts him. Every role he plays is essentially the same. He isn’t terrible, just not capable of carrying a film by himself.

I don't think Gandolfini is a bad actor. I've liked him in a couple of things (Romance and Cigarettes in particular, and The Sopranos). He's definitely a different character in this than his other roles.

The problem for me was that he just didn't pull it off. The role was for a military nerd with an inferiority complex, and I didn't feel that coming from him. It seemed like he was trying too hard almost.

He's a great actor - but sort of repulsive. So his characters are mostly repulsive.

I thought he did well in this, I hated him so much. He was this pathetic officer who had a prison detail and had never seen combat, he was bully and a loser.
He was not an honourable man

James Gandolfini did the superb job and was absolutely excellent. Just because your mindsets are stuck on The Sopranos doesn't make Mr. Gandolfini a bad actor. Mr. Gandolfini is an excellent actor and if you didn't narrow your mind to The Sopranos don't take it out on him. He did a very good job that's a fact. He played him perfectly

reply

I agree, he did a great job in the role. He wasn't playing Tony at all. Maybe some others just can't see him doing anything else.

They choose not to see past that

I too enjoyed Gandolfinis performance on this one, and didn't even think of him as Tony Soprano for many times. The closeups of him near the end and his impression are close to perfection.

Protest the Top 250, vote this a 10!
