Commissioned Officers Behind Bars?

Has the USA ever sent a general to prison for any reason? It seemed very strange to see such a high-ranking commissioned officer chucked-in with the squaddies. I don't think it's ever happened in Britain. Anybody got the low-down on this subject?

I'm not aware of any instance of a general officer being court-martialed and sentenced to prison by the United States.

It's certainly never happened in Britain. Robert Redford in this film goes to prison getting a few men "needlessly killed", it would be quite funny if that happened to a British general considering how much blood was on the hands of British generals in the days of the Empire and World War One.

I kept thinking of Captain Charles McVay during this. He was the only ship commander ever tried/court martialed for losing his ship during wartime. Captain is the navy equivalent to Colonel, which is one rank below Admiral/General - a pretty high rank in the whole military food chain. But, even Capt. McVay was not sentenced to prison.

Officers seem to always get the opportunity to quitely retire.
