Irwin's crime.

What was it that Gen. Irwin did to get himself locked up?

Against executive orders (the president) he sent in a platoon of men to take out some dictator. Even after receiving intelligence showing that his men would most likely be killed he did it anyway. They did get killed (8 I believe) and as a result he was convicted of disobeying an executive order.

Honestly in real life a famous, former POW, decorated 3 star general, with no past investigations ever of been court marshaled for that. At worst he would of been pushed into early retirement.

And if he was sent to 10 years in prison it would not of looked like that. Real army prisons are much nicer and civilized. They are funded and maintained by the Federal Government. He would of been given special treatment and sent to the best prison and placed in the nicest section with privileges.

You don't get to that level without having MANY friends who are high up.

The backstory re General Irwin would have been a better movie than the one depicted in The Last Castle. He disobeyed a presidential order during a peacekeeping mission in an African state. As a result, men under his command were killed. I am a huge Robert Redford fan, but this film is dull.
