I turned it off

is this brasilian humor? I don't get it att all. Silly and Stressful like a queen fight and without intelligence (at least to me but it is always hard to GET humor from other cultures, I have major problems with Chinese comedy although i love their dramas. I loved city of god too so i am not dissing brasilian culture)

I completely understand what you're saying...
Of course it is hard for people who are not Brazilian to get the joke of this movie. It's been a long time since a watched this movie but I can tell you that I was amused not only by the film in itself but also by its characters. João Grilo was so funny. I liked him the most.
Sometimes I dont get the jokes from American or French films. it's only the difference of cultures, indeed.

Don't worry. It is really hard to americans to understand anything outside they borders.

City of God it's easiest to americans to understand, in fact, violence and guns are what americans know and teaches better.

PS. I am from Slovenia and I think the movie is great and INTELLIGENT.

Dear Slovanian friend,
no need to get nasty here. He is entitled to his own oppinion. I am glad that you were able to appreciate the beauty and intelligence of this piece of brazilian art

I think you've got to give it some time. I found the humor somewhat strange and incomprehensible at first too, but after a while I started to appreciate it. At least it's good you realise the taste in humor is different in every culture.

And bzarmond, that comment was uncalled for.

It's okay for you to not get it. It's not supposed to be an universal movie, it's really meant for people who know our culture. Not even all brazilians are aware of it. Me, I'm from the Northeast of Brasil, I can get the comedy and the critic, and, most of all, the culture elements throughout the movie. But I don't get sometimes themes or jokes from other cultures, it's life, one can't know it all. But that doesn't make the thing I'm seeing bad because I don't understand it. The absolute majority of brazilian critic and public loved the movie, so I guess it is indeed good.

Also the jokes are quite hard to translate, because even in portuguese they sound very diferent.

And this is a very cultural movie, so there are a lot of themes and jokes that people outside the culture really cant understand.

reply

It is not only a cultural difference. I have the dvd and I tried to watch it with english subtitles, just for fun... And, well, it's funny how the jokes get lost in the translation. The funny of the series are also in the way people talk, the accent from Nrtheast Brazil and some slangs. I mean, that creates the perfect atmosphere to the movie. So I think someone who doesnt understand portuguese and Brazil's variety of accents will never get all the jokes from the movie.
As well, I remember when I was younger and watched Friends, I could never get any jokes about Ross' ex wife Emily's brittish accent. I'm able to understand it nowadays because I improved my english and my knowledge about the language.

Well, neither you nor the film is to blame.

The film is not based on BRAZILIAN culture, but rather on life of some cities in the northeast of Brazil. Of couse that the culture of these cities differ completely from the sao paulo, rio de janeiro , or roughly, any brazilian city out of that region.

So, can you see how specific this is? That is why you couldnt grasp it. The movie was not made to thrive on standard jokes, but rather to tell the life of these aforementioned cities on a cartoon-ish way. Therefore, there is nothing you can do, and my recomendation is that you try other brazilian movies.

Regards!
