Is it deliberately ambiguous?

Certain parts of the film such as some of the costumes (the jail uniform in particular seems very old) and the cars suggest that it's not set in the recent past i.e. in the last 20 years and yet the way they speak seems quite recent and the cop earns $30,000 a year so it can't be all that long ago.

I think it was probably intentional for it to be ambiguous and not set in any particular time or in 'Welcome to Colinwood time'. And I think it works. The whole film is a little quirky and this adds to the quirkyness. It was quite Cohen Brothers-esque.

yeh we don't really know.
some people say the late '60s, but i know what you mean about the 30grand a year thing. It could be late sixties and they just didnt do their research properly when it came to wages.

It could be early 80s even, and Collinwood is just behind its times and forgotten about. You're right, i don't think we're meant to know.

From the trailers and Clooney's tattoos I thought it was the present day. With the costumes, cars and mannerisms it was the 1960s. Also given that they were struggling to raise $500 also suggests that it was set in the 60s.

Its that man again!!
