If he hadn't confessed

I have seen people here and elsewhere make the statement that if Gator hadn't turned himself in, he would have gotten away with the crime, but in the film, didn't they say that his neighbor ID'd him as being the last person seen with Jessica?
Surely the police would have taken a look in his house, and potentially seen evidence?

Yeah, they would've gotten him, eventually.

They would've eventually discovered the ID of Jessica when DNA came into play in the mid-90's - raping Jessica befor killing her sealed his fate, reguardless. Not to mention there were several witnesses who saw him with Jessica, before she disappeared.

But he MAY have evaded capture for several years had that kid not found Jessica in the desert. He proably would've never confessed had her body not been found so quickly.

actually the corpse was so badly decayed, at one point gator's lawyer tried to say there was a lack of physical evidence to prove the sexual assault had really occurred. however this didnt play out in court, possibly (IIRC) due to his prior confession that waived a lot of those types of arguments ever being presented seriously. this is according to the wikipedia article i read a few days ago if you wanted to fact check that last bit.
