Cassandra de Vries

She was a great villain, wasn't she? I wish they had her in PD0 instead of the insipid and boring Zhang Li as her character is way more vivid and interesting. Not only was she power-hungry and nuts, she wasn't bad looking either while Zhang Li had the tubes sticking out of his head (what was that?).

In Initial Vector, she was a very kind woman that you felt sincerely sorry for and acted very sympathetic toward her throughout the story. In a way, Daniel betrayed her (or went behind her back) which turned her into the angry, power-hungry woman that she is today!

Seriously, she is one of the reasons the movie should be made because while she doesn't wholly steal the show, she certainly steals a chunk of it. Is anyone else as big of a Cassandra fan as I am?

reply

She was totally a cool show to watch. I love watching her bicker fights with Mr. Blonde in the cut scenes. She was nasty and cruel and I loved her.

reply

Yeah, byzantinechild, I completely agree with you: She is definitely one of the main reasons for making the movie. De Vries is, by far, the most interesting character in the game. It's a shame we didn't see more of her.
Question: Does the fact that she repents at the end, and sacrifices her own life to allow Jo to escape, make her any less of a villain? That's hardly living up to her description of being "thoroughly evil". It seems to me as if the writers, having moved the storyline away from the human villains and more towards the skedar, suddenly remember Cassandra and decide to give her a final piece of retributive justice. Her sacrifice just seems uncharacteristic, that's all.

reply

She used her life and Jo as her revenge towards Mr. Blonde.

reply

So, while she wasn't wholly evil in the end her only motive for letting Joanna escape and sacrificing her life was to let her destroy the Skedar and get revenge for her. They should've had a memorial for her at CI or what would've been funny is if Cassandra and Joanna fought their way through the ship together.

Cassandra: Foolish child! That alien is more of a hindrance than help!
Joanna: You have a point... (kills Elvis)
Cassandra: Excellent, things will run much smoother now.

reply

Ha! And while they're at it they can get rid of Jonathon too!

reply

Jonathan: Right we're near, cover me Jo.
(Cassandra randomly walks in)
Joanna: What? You don't like me yet and you're not even IN these levels.
Cassandra: That man over there is more of a hindrance than help.
Joanna: I suppose you have a point...
(Joanna kills him)
Cassandra: I'll tell the A51 Guards to stop killing you.

But back on topic, Cassandra, I agree with you ikinane, that she is far by the most interesting character in the PD Universe, they really dig deep into her character in Initial Vector, the novel where she is a computer genius that was envied by her colleagues and fought her way to the top honestly, and she shows she has a human side (about her brother who died in a car crash that motivated her to create a traffic program), and when Daniel "betrayed" her, it sent her on a downward spiral vying for revenge, power, and greediness, which was against everything she stood for.

I love this woman, she is so cool! I'm always drawn in video games to the tall, bad girl characters (Ivy from Soul Calibur II anyone?)

reply

Tall, bad-girl characters, eh? Check out Kiko Hayashi in "Nightfire".
I haven't read Initial Vector, but I've heard a bit about it. I love the way people are actually working hard to build up the Perfect Dark world by giving credible backround to the events of the game. It's so cool!
What do you reckon? Could Miranda Richardson pull off this part in the (should-be-made) movie?

reply

Kiko isn't actually that tall in comparison to Bond or Rook but she certainly spells out "bad" with that leather, dominatrix getup (a la Ivy).

Miranda Richardson definitely could, only problem is she's a bit short.

I'd opt for Natasha Henstridge or my personal favorite, Alison Doody.

reply

Who's Natasha Henstridge?

reply

Tall, blonde, Cassandra-esque. But my main pick is Alison Doody. Do you know who she is?

reply

Alison Doody: I'm Jenny Flex.
Roger Moore: Of course you are.

I don't know. I'd have to see Natasha Henstridge first. What's she been in?
Then again, someone else suggested that woman from the Bourne Supremacy. She wouldn't be bad either.

It would have been good if AD's part had been expanded a little in A View To A Kill. But even then I reckon Grace Jones would steal it from her her.

reply

I like your pick for Doody (hehe). Loved her as a villain in Indiana Jones, and you can perfectly see her good side and bad side in that film.

And oh yes, if anyone knows or remembers, who is the model Joanna is modeled after in the original Perfect Dark? I am not sure if they still used her look in the second game, but I've always liked Jo's image in the first one more, even though she is older.

reply

Me too! She looks way too American. I believe the model is named Michelle Merkin?

And I may be the biggest fan of Jenny Flex/Alison Doody on the face of the earth! She must be Cassandra, I love her so much. But yeah, I wish Jenny's character was explored more than May Day's, because not only would she be more interesting I think, she'd be the better looking henchwoman as well.

Elsa is amazing! Another reason for Alison as Cassandra. Henstridge was in 'The Whole 9 Yards', three of the 'Species' movies, and she's on the show 'Commander in Chief'.

Personally, she'd be choice two between her an Alison Doody.

i can see the woman who played Karen Hayes in 24 doing it...ummm, wat was her name

Jayne Atkinson

or even Sharon Stone maybe

yeah

and Keira Knightley as Dark...but the rest of the cast would have to be lesser known, purely so that they can blow the budgets on great effects and whatnot

reply

Doody would probably work for cheap since she's relatively unknown, but still hot.
