I think so. The symphonic treatment on the older thrash songs is cool to hear b/c many people had been thinking for years that their compositional nature was well suited to symphonic interpretation. And as for the 90s songs on S&M, particularly those on Load/Reload, I think they sound better than the originals in some cases.
Anyway, S&M was certainly better than the preceeding and succeeding original albums (ReLoad and St. Anger) for me.
I agree. Some of them don't work that well, but the ones that do are absolutely phenomenal. The 90s probably a little bit moreso, and they do sound better in some cases. Like I have a hard time listening to the album version of Hero of the Day now. It's just so natural with the orchestra, and the orchestrations are really beautiful.
