Songs that needed to be there...and those that didn't...

I have to say, there were songs that NEEDED to be on the S&M setlist and it was a damn shame that they weren't. The first ones that spring to mind are;

Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - WHY? This song is just...godly.
Fade To Black - My god, this could have sounded so good.
Orion - There should have been room for a second instrumental.
Ride The Lightning - Mightn't have suited, but it rocks.
Astronomy - Such a good cover, would have been well-suited in my opinion
Turn The Page - Same as Astronomy

Also, I feel that '...And Justice For All' as a whole was neglected (only 'One' was used, despite the number of good songs - perhaps Blackened or And Justice For All should have been on the list?)

I don't know WHY Enter Sandman was on the list. Maybe because everyone knows it. Personally, I dislike the S&M version; I felt that it just wasn't suited to the orchestra. I prefer the Live Sh*t version.

But hey, these are just my opinions. Feel free to comment.

Just about any song they've ever done could have been on it ('cept for everything on Kill 'Em All), but Anesthesia-Pulling Teeth might have sounded pretty cool, then again maybe not.

I don't know why they have "Battery" as their closing tune, and why they have it on the album. It's cool and everything, but I would have chosen another one to close out on.

I think Battery was chosen because they've gone out on it many times before...especially on some of their recent European tours. I guess they just wanted to keep the norm.

I was thinking the other day that 'The Four Horsemen' would sound good...probably my favourite song from Kill 'Em All, along with Seek and Destroy and Whiplash. Definite agreement with Anaesthesia - that would sound pretty awesome.

Another thing I just thought of...
Why on EARTH was Devil's Dance played? I hate that song. I don't think it should have been on the playlist.

Any other of their ballads would have sounded teriffic I'm sure.

Unforgiven
Unforgiven II
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Fade to Black
Low Man's Lyric (just add some heavy guitars it'd kick a$$)

I would have loved to hear To Live Is To Die as their opener, but I think Ktulu was the better choice. They already had orchestration in TLITD, maybe that's why they didn't use it. Orion would have been almost the better choice, that'd sound REALLY cool.

Nothing Else Matters and Hero of the Day are great. Hero of the Day is probably my favorite track of this album/home video.

I'm just glad they did this project. I don't think any other bands that did this even come close, except for maybe Savatage/Trans-Siberian Orchestra. They actually have been doing it for a long time.

NEEDED:

- Seek & Destroy
- Fade to Black
- Creeping Death
- Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
- Orion
- Blackened
- The Unforgiven

NOT NEEDED:

- Of Wolf and Man
- Devil's Dance
- Bleeding Me
- The Outlaw Torn

reply

Paranoid_Android_82, i HIGHLY dissagree with your choices of songs that didn't belong. I think Devils Dance was a bad choice too. But Bleeding and Torn are 2 epic songs that needed that symphonic kick to make them So Much More.
Oh come on :P, how can you not enjoy Of Wolf and Man on that??? It was just a major croud pleaser.

reply

Everything from "Ride" to "Justice". The entire Cliff are and "Justice" are made for symphony and it would have made a great tribute. Anesthesia would have sounded great.

Every single ballad and instrumental would have kickass. I dearly missed "To Live Is To Die". I really think that song would have been a good goodbye to Cliff. It should have been the closing number.

Mostly of "The Black Album" would have made the cut (My Friend of Misery??? What tha *beep* happened with that one???) I didn't like the S&M version of Enter Sandman either, but Sad but True kicked ass.

As for the Load/Reload material. Except for the more quiet stuff I think it was a great mistake putting anything from those on the setlist.
The material up to "Black" was very much classic orientated and pretty much fit straight in with a symphony (although a symphony could have problems playing Dyers Eve, lol)

The Load/Reload material was much more blues orientated and the essence og blues is simplicity. Blues was never made for big symphonies and suites. It was made for crowded, filthy nightclubs.

reply

yeah it has been bugging me why they didnt include more from the 80's metallica. ktulu was amazing however. here are some that i feel should have made the cut

1. Fade to black
2. Orion...although they dont play the whole of this song live due to respects to cliff, would have A *beep* MAZING with orchestra
3. Four horseman
4. Anesthesia...but without jason playing, i think this would have been totally phenomenal with just the orchestra playing it
5. To live is to die, with a larger orchestra it makes PERFECT sense to play it
6. My friend of misery
7. Damage inc, the intro to this song with orchestra would have been awesome. the song itself would definatly worked

Yeah it is actually quite possible to have a second S&M set with the amount of material that was discarded. we can all dream though :)

reply

I thought the Battery finish was awesome - it's a great idea to finish with a fast-paced song. The Call of the Ktulu and Master of Puppets introduction was fantastic as well.

I really like Devil's Dance, I thought the orchestra sounded unique on that song. 'Fuel' was unbelievable.

Not to crazy about the 'Of Wolf and Man' version yet.

I would have put 'St. Anger' (the song) on the list if it had been out at the time.

reply

just wondering why do u think it would make a good symphony song?

st anger wasnt too crash hot IMO, how would st anger work with an orchestra?...its crunch crunch slap slam metal, as opposed to other metallica songs which have melody etc. for example hardly any of kill em all would work with an s&m. only anasthesia and seek and destroy maybe

OHHH AND FOUR HORSEMEN

reply

i love u!!! i agree with u. i would also like to add, - Human (one of the new songs) is horrible.

reply

you're *beep* kiddin me!!?? The Outlaw Torn could easily the best arranged for the symphony....agree with the other ones...

reply

I believe there was way to many songs from the abomination we call 'LOAD'
'RE-LOAD" & the 2 new tracks... no comment, songs i believe should have been a replacment...
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Fade To Black
Orion

reply

Precisly, all great songs that unexplainably did not recieve a spot. its strange because although i am strictly pre black album metallica fan, i quite liked no leaf clover...everything on load and reload i HATE and i believe they only played the majority of those songs to appeal to the mainstream audience whom may not have been familiar with metallicas older catalouge

reply

To Live Is To Die probably would be pretty good if they shortened it.

reply

Turn the page would be neat, but didn't they release this before Garage Inc?

And there better be a damn good reason why The God That Failed wasn't included. That song is AWESOME.

reply

Should've added To Live Is To Die near the start and Dyers Eve as the closer after Battery.

Why does everyone hate the Load/Reload albums,Maybe they wanted to go to other forms of rock. By the way, they needed to do more mellow stuff because they are getting older. also, the cover for the load/reload album covers are disgusting

Creeping Death and Four Horseman needed to be there!

reply

In responce to the above statemnent...Slayer are old have they changed from thrash to "hard Rock" same as Megadeth they havent watered down their sound to make corporate rock... Bob Rock was the death of Metallica, i'm glad they pi**ed him off in favour of a real producer Mr. Rick (Reign In Blood)Rubin!

reply

Megadeth did water down their sound. The album was called Risk. Do your research before you speak pal.
