Hmmm... I like the series better, but just because...

...there was just so much more of Hitomi and Van's story in it. :)

(spoilers)

In the movie, I'm startled and maybe just a bit disappointed by how easily/quickly Hitomi and Van get together. During the series, we see how subtly Van likes Hitomi (Such as when Hitomi changes into one of the princess' dresses and Van is so taken aback that he silences Merle's fat mouth by a squash on the head... hehe, one of my favorite parts) Or when Van notices Hitomi and Alan holding each other. It was the slow romance of Hitomi and Van in the series that kept my attention (among other things.)

I'm also disappointed that Alan was pretty much ignored in the movie... even though I know there wasn't enough time for his story.... but still... It's a beautifully animated movie and another way of looking at the series.

I like the series better also, but you have to remember that they boiled down a 20-something episode series down into one movie.

LOL, awesome, I do want to watch the series... I saw it in the store the other day on DVD but it was in FRENCH, I hate French, do you know if a nice English speaking Canadian can get ahold of it easily?
I thought that in the movie anyway Van was kinda frosty to Hitomi and she was kinda lame. "VAN! I want to BE with you!"

I miss the series. I live in the states, so it was shown years ago on Fox Kids then cancelled. I loved what I saw of it and am upset it never finished its run in the US. I wish Adult Swim would get the rights to show it.

I like the series better because it actually made some damn sense. That being said I generally prefer the updated character designs in the movie, as I find them much better aesthetically. I kind of wish they could just go back and reanimate the the tv series with the new character designs.

There was also no reason to jam 20-something characters into this movie. Allen and Millerna had very little to do, and were reduced to complete cyphers, when Allen was arguably the third most important character in the tv series after Hitomi and Van. Dryden's presence was totally pointless. Did the Moleman really need to be in multiple scenes? He should've just been a cameo like the Cat Twins Eriya and Naria.

i've never watched the escaflowne series. but i have heard many great things. the movie to me was pretty impressive and i wish it ran a little longer and made a little more sense at the end. i mean. I thought i was going to see this totally awesome fight between Van and Folken. but no. we just see jujuka stab folken in the chest as part of his revenge and then Folken dies and the castle crumbles. that was just a big WTF for me. would've been cooler if there was a huge fight between older brother and younger brother. but oh well. good movie anyway.

The Hitokiri is untouchable.

Hmm, for me it was the genderbending aspect of Dilandau's backstory that made the series interesting, and it's a pity the movie lacked them mentioning that.

The movie is much shorter and has few characters, which is disappointing. The story isn't as good as the series, but the differences in style and tone make it worth watching... I cried several times during the movie, and none during the series.

The movie was very original in concept. I liked it a lot. Saw the first few episodes on Fox. Went out and bought the DVDs after it was taken off the air.

I think the story had a lot more potential if it were re-imagined as something slightly more adult but the basic premise and themes behind the show are wonderful how they are.

Everywhere where the series is original, the movie is derivative. It is kind of sad, but I can see how they tried to capture some of the emotions of the series and just translate them to the movie but it just didn't work.
