what happened to Hitomi?

I know it sounds dumb, but what the heck happened to Hitomi at the end of the movie?
Did she go back to her world?
Because she's on the cliff, she hears that song, she suddenly has wings, then she's gone and feathers are everywhere.
I'm so confused.

I want to see more of you in the lab.
I'll gain weight.

Join the club, if you ask me, they should make a sequal, so we knw what happens to hitomi, an dhte relationship between her and van. I read somewhere that depending on how good ppl though the movie was, bandai was going to thinka baout making a sequal, or something like that, all i know is at the toronto film festival, i think it was, it was rated best animated movie of the year or something like that.

she go back to earth like in the series, after all are the same but in a different dimension (I see like that) and they are subject to the same destiny ;)

It is confusing but in the great tradition they have hinted at something so cool and left you to wonder.

In the japanese edition it is hinted at that SORA is actually the WING GODDESS not HITOMI.

Then at the end they let you notice that she hears something VAN can't and then the wings appear on her.

This could give you a multitude of idea, examples being:

1)that HITOMI IS the/a WING GODDESS
2)that HITOMI was being sent home by the WING GODDESS

There are a few others, that evade me right now. But its meant to be there TO MEAN SOMETHING SPECIFIC AND DIFFERENT TO EACH PERSON WATCHING THE FILM.

Brill idea i have to admit!

Yes, she gets sent back to Earth. They both know that even though they love each other, they can't be together physically. They'll always be together though, spiritually.

I also think that Sora was the true Wing Goddess. She's the one who sings the song and Hitomi hears the song, and at that moment she gets her wings and goes back to Earth. Even though the people on Gaia think Hitomi is the Wing Goddess, there was no other evidence that she really was the Wing Goddess. Sora only pretended to not be the Wing Goddess, to please Folken or something.
