I understand that Escaflowne the movie is a retelling of the anime TV series in darker tones. Would it be advisable to watch the TV series first, to better understand the movie?
Or do you think, watching the movie first would take away something from the series?
I watched the movie first and fell in love with it. Very hard to follow and to understand but still I thought it was very touching. You may want to consider watching the series first but most people who watch the series first are very closed minded about the movie (I've heard some say things like "it sucks"). It doesn't really matter which you watch first, but either way, instead of regarding them as from the same thing, look at them as if they are two completely different works of art.
shareI think you should watch the series first. The Movie does kinda give away some plot points too easyly that are very strong when they are slowly unravelled in the series. And also the movie uses some time to play with the fans of the series. Small things only a fan picks up on!

I agree with kittykattish - I had not seen the series first, but when I saw this film I just fell in love with it. The series would probably be considered more the "definitive" version of Escaflowne, and this film would probably make more sense if you've seen the series first, but that didn't stop me from greatly enjoying either of them.

Most people (and it's evident from some topics on this board right now) who saw the anime first will innately bash the movie out of spite and close-mindedness for whatever reason. Typical elitism, really. Watch whichever one you'd please first.

Without a doubt, watch the series first. I say this because even though the movie is a retelling of the series in a more darker and straight to the point way, if you see the series first you get a good grasp of the characters and the world itself, and then you understand what the point of the movie is (for it being a retelling but almost different thing all together)
But overall, for storyline, it is not essential to see the series first. But since the series came first it makes sense lol
i watched both but i do prefer the series to the movie cos the series is easier to follow, but the movie is excellent too.
