A Rip-off with a twist in plot!!!

I just wanted to know which movie is a Rip-off of the other since both were realesed in 2000: Frequency or Ditto?

I was living in South Korea when the movies came out. I would go see American movies as soon as they came out... (I'm American and I missed the English!) Anyway, the point is that I saw Donggam first, so I'm pretty sure it was release first (at least in Korea). But I wouldn't be too surprised if Donggam was the rip-off. What are the odds that the guys in charge of big-budget Frequency (with DENNIS QUAID) had heard of some romance movie going on in Korea and copied the idea? But at the same time, the idea of communicating with someone in another decade? Sounds like an Asian idea. I just don't know... Could be a coincidence?

reply

I'm not sure either...but, you seem to insinuate that Hollywood doesn't rip-off ideas from others. Original ideas in Hollywood are very scare these days, and it's not uncommon for them to take ideas from other countries. Just a quick example from that time period...Ringu ==> The Ring.

But, then again it could be a coincidence. Btw, I thought Frequency sucked.

Hollywood takes ideas from other countries, and other countries take ideas from Hollywood (usually the bad ones). It's a big incest circle.

Korean cinema is for the most part a bad attempt at making american movies with a failed japaneseness.
Korean movies are so overdramatic and false where the good are so pure and the bad are devils. The acting is always corny and the dialogue is terrible.
If you notice who actually like these it is mostly american pre-teens, ironically escaping Hollywood. They found something different looking, oriental sure enough, but it is still the same cinematography, storytelling, plots etc. as Hollywood.
Of course, there are some great Korean movies out there, but they are mostly ignored.
So saying that Hollywood rips off Korean movies is quite hilarious.

reply

Same as Hollywood? American pre-teens? Now that's hilarious!

There's nothing so pathetic as a bad attempt at trolling^ ^

reply

So basically, you don't watch many Korean movies.

damn man, the stuff splurting out of your mouth/fingers sure is as putrid as what comes out of your rear end... that is by far the biggest BS i've ever read on here. and i've read alot of that
and to comment your last sentence: The Lake House? The Eye? The Uninvited? My Sassy Girl? and more recently/in development Oldboy, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance and A Bittersweet Life? the list goes on and on so suck it boy

What are the odds? Being that a number of Korean movies have been remade by Hollywood in recent years and more are in the works, obviously Hollywood pays attention to what goes on in Korean cinema. It wouldn't be at all surprising if some K-movies served as unacknowledged 'inspirations'.

I thought some shades of 'Frequency,' but only based on the use of the radio.

There's nothing in the way of changing time like 'Frequency' does.

I don't think none of them are rip off because they both came out during the same year. Frequency came out in US in April 2000, and Ditto came out a month later in South Korea after Frequency US release. So I think it's a big coincidence to be a rip-off. But according to the production team, the story in Frequency was written in 1997, and production started in 1999. I don't know about Ditto, but I think this was a coincidence not a rip-off unless Toby Emmerich (Frequency writer) was friend/penpal with Jang Jin (Ditto's writer) and sort of share idea.
