Not credible legally and psychologically

I am a retired attorney and have dealt with cases similar to the one in the movie. In every state, no registered sex offender is permitted to live in the same house with children under 18 even if its his own family. Also in real life Jack would have gotten a prison sentence far longer than one year. In the movie it is hazy as to whether he actually was incarcerated or just lived elsewhere on probation. And psychologically it isa hard to believe that Jack and Carol were married for 14 years and had sex and Carol only remembered the abuse inflicted on her AFTER he returned. It just is not believable and the movie should be renamed A Long Way From Sense

Is it possible they did it against the law (like middle schoolers drinking)?

If there is any possibility - AT ALL - for these things to happen, the movie took the loophole. And if not, it's just supposed to be a somewhat-fantasy tale hitting people "in the feels."

I just started watching this and was thinking the same thing. I was abused as a kid and been in many sexual abuse support groups. Some of these groups included cases of incest. I remember being shocked how some mothers would allow the father or stepfather to return home which resulted in the minors being removed from her custody. The only way she’d get back custody was for the man to move back out.

Maybe it’s based in the level of being a sexual predator. I’m only 15 minutes into the move but they so far have said he touched the daughter in a way he shouldn’t so maybe there was no rape. I don’t know but for the life of me I don’t see how the mother could let him back home. Or how the law could allow it.

Edit- I couldn’t even finished watching it. It bothered me too much that the mom and law would allow him back into the home.
