So is this film dead or what?

No sign of a release date anywhere I can find.

I missed it at the SFIFF. But saw it yesterday at the Four Star Cinema on Clement Street after a brief run at both the Lumiere and Opera Plaza Theatres (both Landmark-owned). I do not know its national release information so I cannot comment upon that.

While it was quirky and convoluted at times, it was a joy to behold. How often does a movie include SRA's dependence upon spermatazoa, the ambiguity of the sexual identity of Karen Black and a virgin who was formerly involved with him/her?

Once again, Tilda Swinton proves she is the Johnny Depp of the female sex. With each new performance, she amazes. Each of the charachters she plays has a distinct identity and she handles the juggling with ease.

Then there is the humour - a scientific investigator whose facial bandaids keep changing position, a copy clerk who cannot seem to position the originals on the glass for exact copies yet thinks the results are art, a research scientist who goes to a salon for a complete makeover and yet leaves looking exactly the same.

In the audience was an elderly couple who could barely move from the entrance to the seats they chose yet they got all of the jokes in the movie and appreciated them. That says alot but then again this is San Francisco and thats where the film was made.

If you liked "Liquid Sky", you will definitely enjoy this film. Look for it on DVD!! :-)

It was on Starz Sunday Sept 26 around 2 AM. I never heard of it but it seemed cool.

Entirely in HD? Darn I have got to get an HD tv and watch it again. The movie was ok, but the idea was very original to cross a software virus w/wetware.

reply

Doesn't mean you need a HD TV to watch it; Normal DV camcorder gives too awful picture to make a film; HD or HDV looks a lot better. Doesn't matter what you're watching it on, it gets downgraded to DVD anyway.

Well, I just saw it today (July 9, 2005) on TMN (the movie network) on Demand. So I think some companies picked it up.

I watched it last night on IFC.

I saw it a little while ago on the movie network. I had no idea what was going on, but it was interesting enough that I watched on in amusement. Tilda Swinton is quite good in this film as the four different personalities....I caught a chunk of the movie, till the end but missed the beginning but it caught my attention enough to watch it through to the end....just...because...it's so damn different.

goodxxgod - I know, eh? I didn't think it was particuarly good or anything, but the colours . . . oh, children, the colours!!!

reply

Yeah, the colors. This movie works best a 2 a.m. movie, and that's surely why they keep showing it on various channels at that time. We used to watch this on weekends, the very minute the party began to wind down. It's only 85 minutes long, but seemed to go on for hours upon hours. Tilda Swinton rocks in just about anything ... this movie doesn't have much else going for it except her and a good sense of humor.

I've just bought this film on DVD and I can't hear a bloody thing anyone says... The picture's fine and the music and soundfx are fine but the speech is really really quiet.
Has anyone else found this or have I got a faulty copy?

reply

Picked this up recently at HMV (Canada) as part of a 5 for $20. The only thing I knew about the movie was that I had seen it at used DVD stores, but since Tilda Swinton was in it, I thought I would check it out.

At the beginning, I was thinking, "WTF?" but by the end, I quite enjoyed the movie. It's not a "must see", but it's quite an entertaining movie, and not what I expected at all.

Am I the only one who is annoyed by the name Rosetta Stone?

reply

Does it really matter either way, whether or not you are the only one?

And to answer your question - I have no idea.

At best, this film was on life support when it was released, and there's no chance of reviving it now. Not that it should be. Despite the presence of Tilda Swinton in a variety of roles and wigs, this is a dull affair about technology and genetics. I suspect this film was in the can for years because it feels more 1996 than 2002. 4/10 stars from me.
