nice set, greatly shot, lots of textures, but....

I've seen this movie from our film principles class. it was beautifully made, each setting was carefully chosen. Pilar Lopez de Ayala really gave justice to her role as the "mad" queen of Spain, but i think it's just her who made a good job in giving life to the movie. Daniel Liotti's portrayal was however, really dry, although he may somehow fit the part... something which reminded me of Daniel Radcliffe's performance in the first and second installment of the Harry Potter series. I just don't think that the movie was not faithful to what history really tells about queen joan of Spain.

How exactly would the movie have been faithful to what history really tells us about Queen Joan? What else did it need? I'm so mad that I never knew before that this movie had been made!!!! Arrgh! I'm a history lover of great female monarchs and I don't know why I never heard that this movie had been made! Was it ever shown in theatres or did it go straight to video?

Yes, it was shown in US theatres, but only in Art/Indy/Foreign Cinema venues; and even then it may have had limited release. I saw it in San Jose, CA at one of the Camera theatres (a local chain).

Juana la Loca is a nicely done movie.it just saddens me to see this woman fall madly in love with someone to the point of insanity.Well, what could i do,that's her story..im looking forward to watching it again though.

a historical movie doesn't have to be faithful to what really happened.a few tweaking, and sometimes huge revisions (i.e. The Untouchables), are done by writers not only to accomodate the span of the film but also to enrich it.historical accuracy is not always the goal of filmmakers.if i was after historical accuracy i'd rather enjoy a documentary on historical subjects than watch a movie.

I agree with Liotti's superficial depiction of Phillip, but, however poor the acting, it's not all his fault. The screenplay is quite sketchy and with lacunae, and so is the direction, plus he played his role speking in Italian and his voice was dubbed over in Spanish.
