was the gratuitous nudity truly necessary?

while this story deals with marital infidelity and thus naturally lends itself to sensual innuendo, i feel much of this sensual angle could've been reasonably alluded to without the need for gratuitous nudity, which only succeeded in somewhat 'cheapening' the entire proceedings to an uncomfortably tawdry degree. your thoughts.

Anticaria, my friend, are you still trolling on Elizabeth : The Golden Age board?! Just kidding...

Anyway, there wasn't that much nudity if you ask me.... I'd say usually for an european movie. I think those scenes were important to show Juana's passion and her husband's insatiability, that's all.

Let me guess - you are American? I feel sorry for you that you could not enjoy the movie the way it was meant to be enjoyed. Something must have distracted you. Why are you so much paying attention to nudity scenes???? Obsessed?? Aaww...

I have just finished watching this movie, and I can say there was no unnecessary nudity at all. It was tastefull and of course went with the content. There is actually nothing more unnatural and ridiculous than these Hollywood bedscenes under the covers or with lights out, or when people wrap themselves in sheets to get up from their beds after sex. (Yeah right, we just had sex, and I cannot be seen naked by you! THAT is normal! Right, Americans?) Now, that is what I find really disturbing, as my intelligence is being insulted by these Hollywood productions. (One of the many reasons why I ignore most of their films)

Here, no, this film was nicely set, the costumes, the buildings, all seemed so right. And yes, when it comes to sex, people get naked. At least in Europe they (we) do. Nothing wrong about that.

I thought the nudity/sex scenes were WAY TOO SCARCE for a movie dealing with such a passionate, steamy love story. I would have liked to see MUCh MORE because it would have not been gratuitous at all, it would have just marvellously emphasized and completed the main character s( Queen Juana) passionate, obsessive feelings for her husband, that oozed eroticism from beginning till end. And yes, those typical Hollywood ”sex” scenes under the covers, with lights turned off and all that are completely ridiculous, UNREALISTIC, prudish and a total turn off. But, on the other hand, I surely wouldnt wanna generalize and say that all americans( or americans directors) are like that because surely it is not true. And to give you an example of what I am talking about, check out ”Henry And June”, ”The Unbearable Lightness of Being and especially ”Quills”, three very erotic and very european-like movies done, not by some european independent director but by an american one(!): Philip Kaufman.

Of course you are right. Sometimes I am just getting too annoyed by a certain attitude. You know, this belief that it is ok to teach a 9-year-old how to kill (shoot), but he cannot see bare breasts...

Thank you very much for the tipps with the other movies. I have never heard from them, so I will check them out this weekend!

I'm American (Alaskan) & I thought the sex scenes in the movie were appropriate. Unlike the ridiculous sex scenes in most American movies! I prefer films made outside of the U.S. due to their realism & lack of a cheesy Hollywood ending.

Considering how much Felipe screwed around, and how much he used his wife's passion to control her I would have expected more nudity than was here. The only scene I thought didn't belong was the ladies in waiting giggly rouging Inez's nipples while Juana sat for her portrait. Juana would not have allowed that in her presence, especially with a witness.

Yes, I'm American. No, I'm not bothered by nudity, especially when it is pertinent to the scene. Though I do object to the guys not getting equal nudity time in general. 
