what a moron!

You would think he'd have learned after the horrors of WWII, but no he hears what he thinks is a burglar in the house, and doesnt even call out to see if it his daughter,he just shoots straight away,
idioitic is all i can say, what a muppet!
even worse he still keeps the gun after finding the granddaughter!!!
Can wait for american gun 2,when he shoots the grand daughter by "mistake"

The whole movie is about how he 'paused' during the war and got his friend killed by not shooting straight away, which is where the flashbacks come in. He thought he learned from his past, and didn't 'flinch' this time, but shot straight away, this time to the opposite consequences.

What you guys don't get was that he was defending his home AND his daughter, though he shot her by mistake.

In the mugging scene, she escapes but loses her purse and ID, and the rental agreement for the car, which the mugger could have used to track her down, when she tells he parents about it.

In any event, he reacted accordingly, not realizing Penny had left the hous and had come back, wearing a hooded sweatshirt.

I don't believe this movie meant to make a statement, but just how someone handles a senseless act of violence, and tries to make sense of it.

And keep in mind that he knew the mugger had been armed, so calling out might give such a person time to get the first shot away. (My dad, also a WWII vet, drew a gun on me in a similar situation, but it was daytime so he saw me a second before he'd have pulled the trigger and a tragedy was avoided. Bottom line: It can happen.)

I have seen enough to know I have seen too much. -- ALOTO

I'm sorry, war or no war, mugging or no mugging, you NEVER fire FIRST without finding out who the person is!
He could have ducked sideways out of the easy line of fire, and called out.

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."
