deeper meaning? !!POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!

Not a bad film really. Not really THAT graphic really either. The scene of the dog hanging by the neck was the only part that really bothered me. It was obvious the dog wasn't really hurt, but it could've been. The movie was a little slow but it had some more exciting parts that picked up the pace.

I was thinking that maybe the film held a deeper meaning specifically regarding chasing success. It seems like the characters in this movie were trying to find success and it made them unhappy ultimately. Even at the end the main character seemed to be wanting more as he stared out the window, even though he got the professorship he wanted.
The girl ended up being disappointed after failing to get on television. The happiest characters in the movie were the most destitute. The bum in the basement, the old lady with the barking dog(at first), the janitor.

When he asked Du-na Bae's character to chase him in order to get her to realize who he was, they ended up passing some girls jogging on the side of the rode. I've heard in Korea, there are academies for girls that fail university entrance exams. They are required to where those gray sweatsuits excercise rigorously, and study all the time. It's kind of a sadistic thing the parents of the girls make them go through in hopes they will end up going to university and be successful.
I thought maybe it was no accident that a group of these girls ended up running along side our two main characters. Everyone chasing success despite themselves.

Anyways, those were my thoughts.

Indeed.
Kind of obvious, but still good thinking.

Bong doesn't make accidents. Thanks for the culture information it just goes to show how ingenious this director is.

What meaning, or logic, do you infer from eating a dog that has been dead for hours/days?

[deleted]

I personally would not want anything to do with someone who eats dogs, but that other poster is absurd for not realizing the connection to eating steak in a store that hasn't been alive in days or weeks.

reply

Eating steak, chicken, fish, etc, that has been preserved from spoiling (fridge or freezer), is not the same as eating a dogs carcass that is roting with maggots. But feel free to enjoy your food any way you like.

When in the film was a rotting dog ever eaten? The film never tell you how long the dogs were dead nor were did it show the dogs rotten. All we know is that the janitor supposedly takes dogs that just died and eats them for dinner. The film doesn't even says it's okay since the janitor was trying to keep it a secret.

looked liked braised dog shank mmmm... haha kidding, but seriously grow up! people eat dog, the circle of life isn't always fair.

Anyways nice interpretation, du-na bae is a great actress

Excellent interpretation. I think the film could have done a better job in setting the scenarios about the happy schlubs and the miserable go-getters, but it was worthwhile nonetheless. If you are not a screenwriter or a writer of any kind, I recommend you pursue it because you are very eloquent with words.

Watching this movie felt like reading a really good Ruth Rendell book. The stories of different characters whose lives intersect by fate, the thin line between normality and violence, and subtle commentary on society (if you enjoyed this movie, you should read something by Ruth Rendell!).

While the two girls were probably crushed that they didn't become TV celebrities, I don't think they were given an unhappy ending. The girl no longer had her crappy job--she was free to do what she liked, and the two girls had each other. The professor, by contrast, left one purgatory and, thinking he had the job of his dreams, finds himself in another prison. I thought it telling that, at the beginning of the movie, he stares into the forest and voices his wish to hike a mountain; at the ending credits the two girls actually hike a mountain.

A very good and enjoyable movie.
