If you love Peter O'Toole

If you come to this movie as a fan of Peter O'Toole (Which is the ONLY reason I came to it at all) I think you will appreciate it much more than most of the posters. I would even go so far as to say that any Peter O'Toole fan would really like this movie - as we love everything he does.
I only watched this movie because I did a Netflix search on Mr. O and it came up. I certainly would not have selected it based upon title or plot.
I was thrilled to see the added surprise bonuses of Alicia Silverstone (Childhood crush), the always incredible Joan Plowright, and my all time favorite curmudgeon "Doc Martin" - Martin Clunes.

It is always so amusing to watch Mr. O' play the stuffy upper crust English Gentleman - as he did in films like "Ratatouille", "King Ralph" (Yes, he was the only redeeming part of that piece of ...), "High Spirits", "The Last Emperor", "Goodbye, Mr. Chips", and so on. It is so amusing because if you look at his filmography, most of the time he is playing the rebel who eschews convention, class, and rules. Starting with "Lawrence of Arabia" and all the way through "Venus" (He was robbed on the academy award on that one, as was the case in so many others.)
He is such a magnificent actor, and there is something about him that makes you wish he would take you under his wings and embrace you as a comrade in arms (He gives the greatest hugs I have ever seen - only Dear Old Dad gave better.)

Yes this was a kind of rote, silly movie. And they asked him to do some very silly things. (If you watch the outtakes during the credits you will see that they asked him to do even sillier things.) But he was game, and he put his heart and soul into everything - even if he was thinking to himself "This is awfully silly".

If you focus on Peter O'Toole's story and consider the rest of it silly fluff, you might appreciate this movie a great deal more.

The movie it self was alright but yeh I'll pretty much watch anything with Peter O'Toole in it. His acting is just that good.

O'Toole was a good deal better than the uneven script.

I'm a totally bitchin' bio writer from Mars!

Thanks for your take on this and yes I came across it the same way and I will watch it based solely on the fact that its a Peter O'Toole film I haven't seen and I really have to see them all. (Wow! that's a long sentence)

Thanks for your review. Thats how I came here to..cross referencing OToole movies on Netflix.
Man, it is such a pity he didnt do more movies in his later years.
He plays that upper crust crusty to the point of a fine art.
Venus-- to much the gent to act inappropriately, but he's old..not dead & doesnt stop
him from secretly lusting a bit. But I loved it because it gave a real truth about getting old. No matter how handsome anyone is--they lose that appeal they once enjoyed.
Pope in The Tudors-- Principled Pope Unprincipled tactics.
Such interesting polarization
In real life, you know he'd be the type to have a cup of tea with & he'd
whip out a flask and spike the tea a bit. Sophisticated rapscallion
Just Love watching him in anything.

I agree 100% -- The movie without Peter & Joan Plowright w/be just what you'd expect looking at the cover of the DVD. Its a fun Sat matinee movie - Very predictible plot.
But ***Peter & Joan are not to be missed*** Dont pass this one by, if youre a fan.
They are brilliant & completely entertaining.
I mean-- Peter O'Toole robot dancing ? They are Lord & Lady Foxley ! Stuffy & snooty til theyre broke..and rent their home to a rock band. The kids --help them to loosen up & learn to laugh & love again. They teach the kids about friendship & refinement. Win Win for everyone. BONUS-- theyre not just in it a little bit-- these are starring roles for both Peter & Joan. I thought I'd seen all his leading role movie..so Im jazzed I found this one. Such a loss of a great actor !
