The Ending

The ending left me dry. I was not sure if there was another disk to watch. Did anyone else feel like me? Otherwise the story was beautiful and I'm glad Mary Ellen saw that Hal was the man for her afterwards. Roddy was just a jerk. But they're all like that now. So nothing has changed.

I too felt like there could have been something addtional at the end...like it stopped abruptly after all those hours watching it.

What was up with that? That was a horrible way to end the movie. I was not impressed.

I agree. I would have been nice to have a little shot of Kate's wedding or soemthing. Did anyone read the book? Was the series fairly true to the booK?

reply

Well actually theres another part after Kates side. (Kate is soposed to be very plain )

It is about how Kates son is a bit of a rebel and Hal ( his grandfather) dislikes him -( partly because he has bannaman blood). Then Roddys daughter who is french stays with Hal and his wife, and while the french girl is there Hal kills his grandson because the grandson tried to molest french girl and Kate then hates him. In brief. And Roddys french daughter marrys one of Hals sons. (very mixed marriages)

If that makes no sense tell me and I'll tell all when it's not nearly midnight!

Wow!It sounds like the story never ends. It would be a very long book to read. I guess I'm glad they ended it when they did in the series!

reply

It was very long, but also very good. Theres loads of other little twists in it. She's a very good writer.

Actually there was a part two, but for some reason it's rarely televised though is available on the dvd. I've never seen it, but a friend told me the dvd is brilliant.

I think its ridiculous that its never screened as the first part just stops, they don't even bother taking the story to the end of that particular plotline (part 1).

Another book that Cookson did this with is 'The Golden Straw'; a wonderful novel, but told over four parts - thankfully they never bothered to adapt that story so it was never butchered about for the screen.

My favourite Cookson novels, and I've pretty much collected them all over the years from boot sales and flea markets, is 'The Branded Man' and 'The Lady on my Left'; they are glorious stories and well worth a read. Another was 'The Bonny Dawn' which is a sad story but ultimately uplifting, though very short.

I love her stories because the main protagonists are not perfect; they are invariably damaged people who are just trying to survive life with a little bit of happiness to make their existence bearable.
