Question for those who didn't like this movie

In almost every movie imdb discussion board, there's always the group of
people who say, "This movie sucked", etc, etc.

I'd like to know what you would constitute makes a "good movie"?
Sure, this movie may not be one of the "Best Picture" nominees,
but it had plenty of good points. There were some great quotes, and
this was one of Jim Carrey's better performances too.

So, name some good movies and why you think those movies were "good".
It seems rather pointless to argue what is a "good" movie or what is a
"bad" movie when people will even say that Shawshank Redemption wasn't a
good movie when it's ranked #1.

The reality is that people today have been dumbed down that unless there's
some CGI, 3-D, never-before-scene stuff, then the movie sucks. Wow.
6.7 / 10 is deserving at the least, but probably should be in the 7s if not
for the dumbed down audience, no offense if that's you.

i think the movie was alright with equal amount of little good and bad stuff. carrey's performance wasn't always good, as someone mentioned here he was some times whispering, as for darbont, he did a breath taking job but he proved that he can't work with a story that's not written by stephen king. the drama in the first half was a little overdone.

i mostly will not be able to answer your reply, since marissa mayer hacked my email, no notification

I am not one of your targets per the heading. I just wanted to say that I love this movie. I saw it 14 times in the theater. It is one of my favorite Jim Carrey movies (another being The Truman Show), and one of my top five faves ever. I think it is a great film and have watched it many times, since I have it on DVD and in my Amazon Cloud. Everyone has a right to their own opinion, love, like, dislike, or hate. What I dislike is when someone starts name-calling if someone else takes an opposite opinion to theirs. I haven't read many message boards for films. In fact until a couple of days ago I was only reading on the Dancing with the Stars board. I find insults rampant on that one, but thought it was just because of the nature of the show (live, celebrities, reality tv), but I've found it on every board. I wish everyone on every board would have respect for people's opinions, and if they disagree fine, but do it in a polite way. Guess I'm just showing my age.😀

Wow. I agree with you on EVERYTHING.

The more I watch The Majestic, the more I like it.

BTW, the most civil boards that I've seen at IMDb are the ones for "Box Office" and "Games: Trivia and Quiz Games". Also some individual movie boards can be very pleasant, particularly the ones for low-key cult-hits like "The Station Agent".

You can give a movie a thumbs up on 9 out of 10 aspects of it but giving a thumbs down on the 10th can kill it, which is what is wrong with The Majestic. I can admire this movie on a number of points but the profoundly stupid politically correct-Hollywood-liberal dumbthink just makes me want to yank my hair out. I can tolerate a lot of stuff but stupidity is not one of them, and it absolutely ruins this movie. So how does Peter Appleton, our fair hero, defend his membership in a Communist group? He was interested in a girl who was a member. Ohhhhh, okaaay. So would this "reasoning" make it okay to join the Nazi Party, if you were after some chick? Apparently so. (You really learn a lot watching movies!)

Let me see if I've got this right: It's okay to support and defend an organization that's devoted to destroying your country as long as the reason you do it was so that you can get laid. I must say - that's a powerful message worthy of a Hollywood studio to spend tens of millions of dollars to put out. Stoopid, stoopid, stoopid.

How come so few people on this board understand this?

Meh. I don't think he was all that interested in communism. I don't think a lot of folks back then new very much about Communism except what the government said via propaganda. In truth, the HOUA was more interested in fighting liberal people at home by linking them to communism. They went so far as to compel "witnesses" to lie. And today, apparently it's ok to for thousands of Americans to be pro-White Supremacists and bow to their new Führer, Donald Trump. I expect you'll troll with more comments about how stupid I or my comment is.

reply

Well there are no trolls on my side. And it's hard to determine what a fictional character thought about anything. But it's clear he was associated with them and his excuse (he was attracted to a pretty girl) is just ludicrous. As I pointed out before, you don't associate with people you don't agree with. That should be obvious to everyone. As to your point about "government propaganda," what exactly is that? It's not like they were telling lies like the Nazis did about Jews, portraying them as subhumans. I'd be interested in hearing examples of what lies or distortions the government told people.

And about your, "In truth, the HOUA [sic?] was more interested in fighting liberal people at home by linking them to communism." Would you be astonished to learn that the HUAC began in the 1930's to investigate Nazi influences in the U.S.? Amazingly, no one seemed to be concerned about it then. And it wasn't HUAC's role to link liberals to communists - the liberals did that all by themselves. And it's kind of bizarre that leftists were so willing to associate themselves with people whose mission in life was to destroy the country.

The problem today is that so many people consider being a communist the same thing as being a Democrat or a Republican. It ain't the same think at all. Why people have such a hard time understanding this is a complete mystery to me.

And as for your statement, "apparently it's ok to for thousands of Americans to be pro-White Supremacists and bow to their new Führer, Donald Trump..." that sounds like the writings of a troll. I say that as someone who doesn't like Trump at all and is terrified by the thought he may actually be on the ballot this November. (Just imagine: Trump versus Sanders in November - that's a nightmare too terrifying even for a Hollywood movie!)

The movie is really heavy on the schmaltz, even by Darabont's standards. After 3 sittings i still haven't finished it. I keep waiting for it to get good. I really like the director so i do plan to eventually finish it.

(a) It makes NO sense, no matter how much folks try to rationalize it. A whole town believes he is this soldier? (b) What a coincidence his car wrecks right next to the town with the presumed dead soldier that he looks enough like for an ENTIRE TOWN to believe he is him. I thought the twist might be that he was in Heaven but no... (c) Jim Carey, great comedian maybe, hell, even a good Movie Star -- but I never buy him for one second as a dramatic actor and this movie didn't help at all. (d) Scene after scene of pure schmaltz, one of the silliest versions of a HUAC meeting ever (I assume "Klein" was meant to be "Cohen"), a pathetic "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" speech and, oh yes, let's throw a little "Cinema Paradiso" in the mix too. And a ridiculously bland leading lady who can't just be lovely but has to also become, drum roll, a lawyer in 1952 or whatever. Though all that seems to go to the back burner once her man returns to his inexplicable hero's welcome (after a just as inexplicable backs-turning-on-him twenty minutes before by the whole town).

I could go on but it's like shooting fish in a barrel.

I finally put it on after having the DVD on the shelf for years and could not BELIEVE how bad it was. As in absolutely be one of the worst films I have ever seen. Frank, how could you.
