OK.....

Hm.... I've just seen a clip from it....well....it's baaaad. OMG what was all THAT about!!??

It is not bad at all... I think you perhaps need to read it or see the full thing. Basically it is about a man, his wife and his mistress, trying to work through their mistakes during their afterlife. The urns they are in are burial urns, it is actually a really good piece of writing and has been filmed very well. You can rent it and trust me seeing the full thing or reading it and understanding what it is about is much better than watching a clip.

reply

Ok. 'cause I thought it was just weird... I didn't get it at all. Why did they speak so fast!???

reply

The way I looked at that was because they had been going through it so many times.... I think it was just a device used by Anthony Minghella to give the audience the impression that these three people had spent a long time saying the same things. What you see id sort of like a vision of Hell or Purgatory, when you see the whole thing you realise that they are not the only ones doing this. The camera pans into them and out from them and each time you see them surrounded by other burial urns containing people doing the same sort of thing, talking through their mistakes from their lives.

If English is not your first language it is probably really hard to understand and will possibly need to watch it a few times so you can catch all of what they say. I know you can rent "Beckett on Film" and Play is on the 4th DvD, there is a documentary that you may want to watch as well but that is on the 1st DvD.

A lot of Samuel Beckett's later work is a little surreal, he liked his audience to think about what they are seeing and hearing. Play is one you have to think about.

OK. English is not my language, but I understand quite well anyway. I live in Sweden and I think it's quite hard to get that DVD.

reply

Ah I see... I know it is on region 2 DvD as I am in the UK and I rented it from Blockbusters. But I am not sure how easy it is to get in Scandinavia or Europe, I hope you do manage to rent it.

reply

dragon... it was not a device by the director... Beckett is extremely detailed in his stage direction, and the fact they speak so fast comes right from beckett himself

reply

omg, it really is not bad one bit. i think you just need to watch it a couple of times perhaps. it is basically about what the other bloke said in your first reply, but they are in erns almost to show they have sinned and they say it fast, to give the impression they want to get the story out of the way. they say it over and over again to show they are stuck in a cycle of telling the story almost like being in hell for what they have done to each other. It really is a fantastic piece of theatre, if you ever get chance to see it! In the mean time here is the script to help you get familiar with the plot! :)
