Was he on Earth in the future, or literally 'another world'?

I thought that "oh it was Earth all along" might've been an ending bit or something like that, but since the ending left many questions unanswered...

It couldn't have been Earth in the future because they were two moons in the sky.

Yeah, it's amazing how a simple gesture like that can create such a literal feeling of literal alienation and being so distanced from all that is familiar.
