I was just thinking that in order to sneak out, I would have shrunk myself, and then had Goddard carry me down the stairs, inside his mouth or something. Goddard tells Jimmy's parents that he needs to go outside and take a dump, Hugh lets him out, and Jimmy escapes. Jimmy isn't so bright after all.

That's the point of the movie: He's only a genius until a certain point. That's why he screws up so many times.
