Question.

I've never seen this movie, but i'm thinking about it, but before i do, i wanted to know if this is one of those movie's that like bashes Mormons? like it makes them bad people, and gets things about their religion wrong? Becasue i hate those kind of movies, and i was just wondering. Thanks

Dutcher is LDS. This is a great movie. It hit really close to home for me and made me think long and hard.

No, I think this movie handles everything just perfectly. The Church members are shown as normal human beings, faulted, and yet, not idiotic. This is a great movie that deals with serious issues that we as LDS members often try to steer clear of. I think what it portrays best is our inability to escape the tragedies of life. And yet, despite it all, it shows that Christ can heal our deepest wounds. I very highly recommend this idiot-free movie.

It does not bash Mormons. However, it totally disregards the Constitution, so if that part does not matter, no problem!

So does murder.

No, murder is a violation of the law. What I was talking about was a major violation of the Bill of Rights, specifically the 4th Amendment and also separation of State and Religion (which is an issue here in Utah anyway). A Law Enforcement Official (here, the Sheriff) cannot tell his deputies to force each person in the community to let them search their homes. Without a warrant, no person can be forced to submit to a search. And to use their religious "beliefs" or Church over their head to "force" them to submit, is not only morally wrong, but, it would never hold up in a court of law, due to being a violation of the 4th Amendment.

Unfortunately, there are people who saw this movie and believed that what the Sheriff did was just fine. My mother is one of those people. She said that no Bishop would do anything illegal, so if he had them do it, everyone should just agree and do it. Sadly, this is an acceptable frame of mind here.

I loved this movie, and I think it's stupid to think that everybody should behave perfectly in the movie. In fact, the movie was about people being imperfect. The director wasn't saying that violating the Constitution is a good thing. He was just saying that violating the Constitution is what this one character was willing to do in order to try to save a girl's life. He wasn't saying it was the right decision. He was just sayiing that it was the decision the character made.

It's a great movie, and it is not meant to be a lesson in Civics.

I didn't see it like that, but more as a way of using their sense of community/humanity to get everyone in town to submit to a search - the young girl was missing, and if the townspeople wanted to help, and had nothing to hide, they would naturally go along with the plan. That's why the finger of suspicion fell so strongly on the photographer, because his mother refused to let anybody into her house; a desperate move, perhaps, to save the girl, but more to do with personal ethics than religion.

I thoight the whole search thing is very interesting.

Did he do it as the Bishop, or did he do it as the Sheriff??
If he did it as the bishop, than, no, it wasn't "right" but there wasn't really any legal obligations, if there were murders going on in my town, and the bishop wanted to search my home, I would think it was odd, but I would do whatever it took to save somebody's life....

now, if he did it as the Sheriff, than yes, it was a violation of the constitution... but that just shows how desperate he was to protect the people of his town...

What? Your statement makes no sense to me?

I was merely, like, lamenting that nobody can, like, EVEN WRITE, without, like using the word "like" after, like, every other word..

Thus, I, like, reiterate--"Brrrrrrrrrrrr"-- an expression that hopefully reveals me shuddering at the prospect of, like, having to actually go through my day, like, reading people writing like how they, like, talk.

My response, translated for people who don't put the word "like" everywhere--

"No. This film does not bash Mormons. It was MADE by a Mormon..."

Like, wow...
