Why is it even called the Ringer?

I can't figure our why its called that, am i missing something?

Ringer is a term used to describe a professional who cheats by posing as an amateur, as he does in this movie, by not being disabled but participating in the Special Olympics so he can win the bet.

I could have held you in my arms forever, and it still wouldn't have been long enough.

Thank you very much for explaining and the OP for posting. I wondered that myself honestly but did not want to attract insensitive persons like willydoe71.

I am neither from an english based culture nor from a sports environment, so I did not know. And I don't see how insulting is helping to understand.

It's called the ringer because Jeffy only drops floaters that just go around and around no matter how many times he flushes.

I'll add to the athletics defintions that the second poster made---it's short for the term for wannabe or lookalike--"dead ringer".Y'know----an impostor.

ringer means imposter. he was an imposter because he wasn't actually handicapped
